Upper thread keeps shreading on juki 1541

Can only sew for less than a min. upper thread shreds and jams up Using 18 needle and size 92 thread

  • Joe Howarth

I have a Juki 1541S that seems to have developed shredding problems. I think I have found the answer! I noticed that the thread TWISTS rather than shredding but the results are the same; the thread breaks.

All of my thread is Z (left) twist AND I NOTICE THAT THE TWISTING UNRAVELS THE THREAD and the buildup at the needle gets to be a fuzzy bundle of thread prior to breaking. Most machines use the Z twist. I don't have any S twisted thread BUT I do have a roll of very good BONDED thread that DOES NOT TWIST and with that in my Juki, I no longer have so called shredding problems.

Hope my experience helps others because this stinking problem has haunted me now for weeks. Spent countless ours adjusting the machine to no avail. So yourselves a favor and either insist on good bonded thread or S (right) twisted thread. Oh the thread I am using with excellent performance is American & Efird's Sunstop N-WCK Bonded T-90. The roll also has printed on it UV SO-JT BLK.

This thread has an excellent bond and I cannot untwist the thread with my fingers.

Without seeing your manual it's hard to tell for sure, but it is likely that your needle and thread combo is causing the problem. Another thing can be a burr or nick on the presser foot or needle plate. First change change the needle to a different one in size 18. If it still shreds we no it is probably the needle... size up to a 20. If it works... you are good to go.

If that doesn't work... take off the presser foot and examine the needle plate for burrs, stab marks, chips. Also examine the presser foot.

If you find a defect carefully smooth that with some very fine sand paper. and try sewing again.

Good luck

SOURCE: Needle Thread breaking after about 30 seconds of quilting

Make sure the feed dogs are dropped (or feed dog cover is on - I can't remember which way this machine works). The stitch length on the machine has no function so ignore it. (I set it to zero so the machine doesn't have to work as hard). Hopefully this is all that's wrong. If not, use a shorter setting for the stitch length on the regulator, oil the hook and move slowly and smoothly.
Good luck!

SOURCE: which way to put the needle in the Juki, The

The indent is called the scarf.

The scarf will be at the 3 o'clock position and, if you look closely, you will see the hook pass the needle at the scarf.

When I rewind my boobin, the thread is too loose. How do I adjust it on a JUKI DNU 1541-S?

You're saying the thread on the bobbin is loose/sloppy? That would be a result of the tension placed on the bobbin during winding. Make sure you are using the correct threadpath to wind the bobbin, or the winding tension needs to be adjusted.

Juki ddl8700 shreds the thread

Thread shredding:

Install brand new needle(s). Make sure the needle eye is the appropriate size for the thread you are using. Check that the needle is the correct type for the fabric & thread, ie coarse (abrasive) fabric would benefit from the protection of a top stitch needle which has a larger scarf.

Sometimes the thread is being held back in the thread path causing the needle to wear and shred the thread. Check that the upper tension is correct. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread. Make sure the upper thread follows the correct path and that it is not threaded incorrectly or looped around the spool pin or a thread guide.

I have juki 1541 industrial machine needle want pick up bobbin thread??

Is your needle inserted correctly? Try taking it out and inserting again. Is your bobbing threaded correctly? Try taking it out and re-threading. You might also try cleaning the bobbin area. The only other think I can think of is that you may have the wrong needle in.

Juki dnu-1514s The machine is threaded and and the bobbin is loaded. When I sew, the machine does not make any stitches. It's as if the machine is not threaded and I'm just running fabric...

Your bobbin system isn't engaged. this can happen for several reasons, mostly when things are a little out of whack.
The 1541 has a 'clutch' it located near center on the bottom surface and is a silver circle below the 'arm'. Bring the needle all the way down, now push the clutch and hold while you turn the wheel back (top away from you) eventually the clutch will click when everythings aligned and engage the bobbin system again.

Sewing 1/4" leather. Bottom thread

You did it backwards!!! Reset the bottom tension to the default position, with heavy threads its touchy to get back to normal. Turn the upper tension about 1 turn clockwise (tighter) and try. No luck, try a turn then test, then a turn, test.....The size of the thread can cause issues as well. We mostly use #69 nylon threads, but the 1541 can use # 69 to 192 without to many problems. look in the book for how to reset the bobbin case tensions. The 1541 is a wonderful machine, much better quality than the chinese junk being sold nowadays.

On my new juki 1541 to the left of the thread tensioning screwknob there is a thread guide of some sort that has a small wire spring on it. Wwhen I sew the thread falls out of this guide and ends up behind...

Usually, if there is spring mechanism on or near the thread tensioner, that spring is an integral part to the tension system. Sounds to me like it is not being threaded correctly.

Cannot machine quilt without the thread breaking and/or shredding. I've change needle, thread type and size and tension on my fabric.

If the thread is shredding and breaking, there is an incompatibility of your needle, thread, and fabric. Could be old, bargain bin, or poor quality thread--does the thread have little "hairs" of thread lint sticking out of it--that's probably not good quality. Look for fresh, good quality thread. Try a brand new needle--a sharp if you are sewing woven fabric. Make sure the thread is not too big for the needle eye. Sometimes, a top-stitch needle or embroidery needle will work well on FMQ. (A top-stitch needle has a longer scarf which helps protect the thread during the multiple times the needle penetrates the fabric before the thread forms a stitch. Shredding means the thread is getting worn out before it forms a stitch. A piece of thread penetrates the fabric 10-20 times before it forms a stitch.) Could also be a snag somewhere that is damaging the thread.

Sewing Needle Troubleshooting Guide

SCHMETZ Household Needle Chart

Most FMQ instructions say the upper and bobbin tension should be the same, however, I find my machine works a bit better when the bobbin thread is just a little tighter than the upper thread. Then the bobbin thread does not "pop" up on the top of my fabric quite as much. It's probably something you will just need to experiment with in getting used to your machine.

P.S.--when threading your machine, make sure the Presser Foot is ALWAYS RAISED so the top thread will seat properly in the tension disk. Failure to do this will cause thread barfs (usually referred to as thread nests or bird nests) under your fabric. Also, before beginning your FMQ, ALWAYS PULL the bobbin thread to the top of the fabric, then hold both thread tails gently in your left hand while you slowly take the first couple of stitches.

My thread is breaking when I'm sewing on my Juki DDL 555

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT NEEDLE FOR THE THREAD YOU ARE USING, AND THAT THE SAME THREAD IS ALSO IN THE BOBBIN. CHECK UPPER TENSION, BY PULLING SLIGHTLY, IF IT'S TIGHT, LOOSEN THE UPPER TENSION.YOUR THREAD MAY BE THE WRONG SIZE OR TYPE FOR THE SPEED YOUR SEWING., and the needle your are using( sorry about the caps lock)
