Press CTRL+ESC. If your Taskbar magically reappears, then it's probably simply been resized too small, repositioned somewhere you didn't expect it, or perhaps it's beneath another application that's running full-screen on your computer.

The workaround? Press CTRL+ESC to access the Taskbar.

If CTRL+ESC didn't make it come back, then the program that displays the task bar most likely isn't running.

That program is often called the "Windows Shell", but it's really "explorer.exe". It's the program that not only displays the Taskbar, but also responds to the CTRL+ESC sequence.

The workaround: press CTRL+ALT+DEL to fire up the Task Manager. Now on the File menu, select New Task (Run...). Type in "explorer" and press OK. That should restart explorer and re-display your Taskbar.

hope this helps

On my Vista desktop, the start/taskbar shows up on the right side when it used to be along the bottom of the screen. why did it move and how can i get it back to the bottom?

First, right-click the taskbar. If "Lock the Taskbar" has a check mark next to it, the taskbar is locked. You can unlock it by clicking "Lock the Taskbar" again. Then, click an empty space on the taskbar, hold and drag the taskbar to one of the four edges of the desktop. When the taskbar is where you want it, release the mouse button.

In vista: taskbar does not show icons of opened files

it might be your taskbar is on auto hide try this

Show or hide the taskbar gl_icon_tip.png Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.
The taskbar is usually located at the bottom of your screen. It looks like this:
getopencontent.aspx?assetid=984f8561-57a1-4b9c-9f22-f0d8dddec294&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml Taskbar
You can hide the taskbar to create more space. If you don't see the taskbar anywhere on the screen, it might be hidden.
Hide allShow allHide all gl_arrow_down_static.gif To show the taskbar
• If the taskbar is hidden, point to where you last saw it to show it again. If you can't remember where you last saw it, try pointing to the bottom of the screen first, and then to the side or top of the screen, if necessary. You might need to move the pointer almost off the screen to show the taskbar.
gl_arrow_down_static.gif To hide the taskbar
1. Open Taskbar and Start Menu Properties by clicking the Start button getopencontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Taskbar and Start Menu.
2. Clear the Lock the taskbar check box.
3. Select the Auto-hide the taskbar check box.
The taskbar is hidden from view. You can see it again by pointing to the place where you last saw it.

1. Open Taskbar and Start Menu Properties by clicking the Start button getopencontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Taskbar and Start Menu.
2. Clear the Auto-hide the taskbar check box.

Virtual PC will not open

If you have Windows 7, 'native' Virtual PC will only be available and functional, regardless of the icon on task bar, if you have: 1) Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate 2) Hardware Virtualization 3) Your PC/Laptop BIOS has support for hardware Virtualization and you have enabled it. If you have all the above pre-requesite, I suggest that you re-download XP Mode and VPC from Microsoft site. If you do not meet the above requirements, you can always install a (free) alternate such as Microsoft VPC 2007 SP1 or better still (e.g. has USB support) VirtualBox. Hope it helps. Let me know how you go.
