Compaq laptop screen is black, fan isn't running but the power light is on, do you think its the processor? or what

In the first instance you need to check your power lead. Exchange it for another one that you know works.

Check first if you didnt dimmed the light to total black from keyboard. If thats not fixing is a mostly sure video chip fail.

This is a fairly common problem. It sounds as if it ran out of battery. Take the charger to a shop and have it checked.

That sounds like a power supply problem. That would be the first thing I would check. If it was the processor, you would have heard a long beeping sound or if it was the memory you would hear about three 'annoying beeps'. The main reason you indicated there is no display on the screen and that the fan spins for a few seconds then shuts off, would hint that power is not going to the mother board long enough to spin the processor or cooling fan. If it seems like you're accessing the hard drive (drive light comes on, flickers intermittently, then goes off, it's a good chance your screen is bad.

First thing to do is plug in an external monitor and start up the laptop. If it comes up with windows, you know it's the screen.

To find out if it's the backlight, or the lcd, toggle the monitor function and shine a flashlight on a slight angle to the screen. If you can faintly see what was displayed on the external monitor, then the backlight inverter is probably bad.

If the external monitor didn't come up, you're probably looking at a motherboard.

The good thing is that all of those are covered for one year under Compaq's warranty, on a new machine.

If you are able to use the external monitor, back up your data, because HP/Compaq usually reformat the harddrive. Additionally, if you've added memory, pull the cards. They want it sent back the way it came from the factory.

I'd try messing with the memory. Try booting one single stick in each of the slots.

I've noticed that this happens pretty frequently with certain hp / compaq models.

If you've already tried that you can try removing the cmos battery for 5 minutes but aside from that the motherboard has probably gone out :(

I would go on the HP or Compaq website. There is a live chat there to talk to a service rep. There are a lot of HP and Compaq notebooks with this issue. (My wife just had one.) They are offering a free one time repair for certain models. Good Luck.

Try repairing the start-up by booting up from the install disc. Then select repair when asked.

Try booting from dvd drive with rescue disk
