  • If you enter the passcode incorrectly, you get the option to reset the pass code if you set it up with a security question, and remember the answer.
  • If that isn't an option, you can try calling the Xbox people (1-800-4-MY-XBOX [this is the US number]), and they will be able to help you. (RECOMMENDED)
  • If you don't feel like dealing with them, you can back up all the data, and just reformat the drive. Just so you know, this will ERASE the hard drive, so you'll have to back it up beforehand. To do this, go through the following steps:
  1. If you have two hard drives in it (which is only possibly with the 250 GB slim), I'd recommend removing the extra (250 GB) one before continuing, so no accidental data deletion occurs.
  2. Transfer all the data to a thumb drive (16 GB limitation). Plug in the thumb drive, and it should ask if it can reformat it. Say yes. Then, go to My Xbox, System Settings, Memory, then press Y for Device Options. (If you have two hard drives in the Xbox, you'll want to highlight the permanent one). Then choose Transfer Content, and pick your thumb drive as the destination.
  3. Next, get the Console Serial Number. Go to My Xbox, System Settings, Console Settings, and then System Info. Write down the Console Serial number, which should be at the top.
  4. Finally, go to My Xbox, System Settings, Memory, and press Y for Device Options again, highlighting the drive you backed up earlier. Select Format, and say Yes. This will erase everything on the hard drive, leaving you free to set it up from the beginning all over again. Then you can just restore all the data back from the thumb drive when you're finished.

I have a 2 MB San Disk Cruzer USB drive that says it is inacessible and asks if I want to format it. It won't format and I need the files on the drive. How can I avoid purchasing expensive data recovery...
If you already tried formatting it the data is gonna be a lot harder to retrieve, your only option is to try data recovery software. Though there are many out there that will let you "try before you buy". That when you can see what if any information will be able to be retrieved. I would consider in the future having two thumb drives and any important data be backed up twice. That is a rule of thumb with backing up data, for it to be a "backup" there needs to be two copies of it. That way if one is lost there is still another copy of it at a different location

You have ruined the file integrity of the flash drive, There is a very slim chance that you will recover any data off of the drive. Most flash drives only have a read/write of about 8,000 to 9,000 times so depending on how much you actually used the drive, it is possible it finally went bad. To format the drive try going to my computer and right clicking on your cruzer drive letter and click format. "ALL DATA WILL BE ERASED WITH THIS OPTION"

Formatting the pendrive
Plug it into another usb socket and you should find it works, Sometimes usb sockets and drives can become corrup.. by right when you reboot you machine it will revert back to normal

You can run a data recovery app on the drive and attempt to pull off any data still accessible. I recommend the GetDataBack Data Recovery apps from http://www.runtime.org . Get the one for the file system on your thumb drive and give it a try. These apps have recovered data from "dead" drives for me more times than I can count.

Leave the thumbdrive plugged in to the computer and reboot.

Right click on my computer, click Manage, click on disk management, locate your thumb drive, right click and choose assign (or change) a drive letter. If it already has a drive letter, give it a different one as it’s already in use

Is this thumb drive USB specific? Some of the newer ones require a 2.0 USB port. It's possible you're plugging it into a 1.0 port.
