I have exactly the same problem with my photosmart printer, even with genuine HP cartridges... It's not a solution but eventually after repeatedly removing and refitting the same cartridge it gave-in and started-up ok for me!I seldom use the printer and I would say it would have this problem every other time I use it.

Did you remove the protective cover / tape, you re put the cartridge.

un plug it, wait a minute then turn back on... it should then do as its told...

Its not software issue,for copying you need not required any software, just plug in power & take copy, if copy is not happening, its definitely printer faulty only.. Open flat bed, check scan head,mechanism & cable,if found any breakage in mechanism,scan head or cable, replace it & check..If its difficulty for you submit unit in service center..

You need to do some basic troubleshooting steps below and hope that it would fix the problem:-

• Disconnect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable from the back of the printer, but leave the printer turned on.
• Open the cover of the printer and remove the print cartridges.
• Close the cover and wait for the Insert Ink Cartridges message to display.
• Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall socket, then wait for one minute.
• Reconnect the power cord. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.
• Open the cover and reinsert the print cartridges.
• Close the cover. If prompted, print a calibration page.
• Print a Self Test to verify printer is functional.
• Reconnect the USB cable, and try to print from the computer.

check leads and connection pointsonce connected windows 7 should automatically detect your printer search for and install the driversclick start control panel devices and printers if you see your printer right click on it you might have to set it as your default printerclick start right click on computer device manager scrollto ports com & lpt if you see a yellow question/exclamation mark ? ! or a red X a new driver will need to be installedhope this helps
