This error comes due to carriage jam. Turn off the printer and unplug it from wall socket. Now, remove the cartridges and check for any dried up ink residue on cartridges on inside the carriage. Clean the cartridges contacts and carriage using a Q-tip dipped i alcohol. Let the carriage and cartridges dry before you plug in the printer.
Install the cartridges and check. If it still shows error then unplug the power cord coming to the printer without switching it off. Now, remove the rear door of the printer and check for any paper jams over there, remove if any. Wit for at least 15 seconds and plug in the power cord. Now check whether it is working.

No, there is no reset button.
disconnect the pirnter from the computer and the power cord. press and hold the power button for 30sec. connect the power cord, and connect it back to the computer.

I just got off the HP help line.  After changing my black ink cartridge a test page was printing each time I turned the machine on.  This is very costly, in both time and ink as the cartridges themselves for this machine hold very little ink.  I tried to learn from HP tech how to turn off the test-print while keeping my color cartridge empty.  It turns out that you cant do it.  HP requires you to keep buying and using cartridges whether you need them or not.If you buy the color ink it will use it up in its testings.  And if you dont buy the color cartridge it will use up your black ink by printing the test each time you turn on the printer.  The printer was inexpensive sure, but I'm paying for it in wasted ink. 

The grinding noise is probably related to the carriage moving back and forth in the product. The good news is...it's still moving! :-)

I would recommend reviewing the steps for clearing a 'carriage jam' in the following section of HP customer care. Even though you do not have a total jam, there are some useful steps for checking the carriage path, to make sure all is clear. The popping noise is coming from the carriage belt jumping on the drive motor cog. It indicates that the cartridge carriage is jamming while the motor keeps spinning. It may be due to a wedge of paper at either end of the carriage bar (horizontal rod) or it may be due to a failing main board circuit.

I suppose you should have some software running on your system to accept the file.

To scan to a computer
1. Place your original print side down on the left front corner of the glass.
