Thread knotting around bobbin case
hello,
I had the exact same problem and could not find the solution until i took my machine to my sewing sensei and i solved my tedious problem.
It was actually not a tension problem at all but a threading problem. Make sure you have threaded your bobbin correctly and that when you pull on the bobbin thread that the bobbin turns the right way. (mine must spin anti clockwise to work)
Make sure that when you pull up the bobbin thread using the needle that it is not over the feed dogs connective bar but under it. A big problem when the thread gets caught around the bobbin case wheel is that the thread is looped around the feed dogs once and that causes the thread to get caught around the bobbin wheel.
In conclusion, thread the bobbin correctly and read over your instruction book before spending the money to get it fixe in s shop.
My thread tension knob fell out of my machine and
Hi,
Open the end where the light is, look for a set screw at the point where the tension assemly enters machine. try tightening that. If that doesnt work, post a reply comment and I will tell you where to go next.
Threading and operation

or i could photocopy pages from my manual and post them too you if that would help. (can't scan as my scanner doesnt work for some reason).
if not than nevermind.
Bobbin thread
Make sure that you have your thread going through all the proper thread guides when winding your bobbin. It sounds like the bobbin is getting wound with little or no tension and this can make a horrible mess when trying to sew. Take a look at your bobbins and make sure they look nice and tight. If they are too loose and you feel like you are following the thread path properly, just use your finger to tug on the thread a bit during the bobbin winding process to apply some tension and that should help.
Brother vx790, my stitches are reversed ( top is on botom & bottom is on top )
It sounds like your tensions are out of adjustment. Your upper tension should be between 3-5 and make sure the tension in your bobbin case is not too tight as well. Pull the thread through the bobbin case and make sure it comes out with a small amount of resistance. If no resistance, tighten the tension just a bit, if too much resistance, loosen it just a small bit at a time.
Cannot thread bobbin
If I remember correctly this machine has a little arm in the bobbin case area. You will need to open the slide plate, move that arm towards the middle of the bobbin. Thread your machine as normal, take the thread going through the needle eye and wrap it around the thumb screw a couple times, then start "sewing" your bobbin should begin filling, once started, you can release the thread wrapped around the thumbscrew. Once filled, you simply close the slide plate and that moves the arm back into place and start sewing.
WHAT NEEDLES FOR SEWING LEATHER ON A LS 1217
The WEDGE POINT NEEDLE, which is designed for leather and vinyl, easily
pierces these fabrics to make a hole that will close back upon itself.
This eliminates unattractive holes in the garment, and also reduces the
risk of the stitches tearing the fabric. The wedge point needle comes
in sizes 11 to 18. The size 11 needle is designed for soft pliable
leathers, while size 18 is designed for heavy or multiple layers of
leather or vinyl.

Thread keeps gathering from the bottom, jams then breaks needle.
The burr is NOT good for sure, most parts on a machine can be replaced.
