Check the power steering fluid level.
If the fluid level is low, you obviously have a leak somewhere and it should be repaired. If the level is up, watch the power steering pump while the engine is running; is the pulley turning freely?
Power steering systems are hydraulic devices. The pump provides the pressure and the steering gear or rack and pinion assembly (depending on the vehicle type) applies pressure in the direction that you are turning the wheel to assist with the steering. When the hydraulics fail or when the internal components fail, your strength is the only thing turning the steering.
But start with the fluid.

I can not turn my ignition switch i turn the steering wheel and it lock up on me

Wheel pressure on the sterring column will prevent the key from turning to start position, Try turning the wheel hard to the left to release the pressure before turning the key to start . If that doesnt do it then try to the right.
Before turning car off make sure the wheels are straight or take your hands off of the sterring wheel before you turn your key to the off position.
Lots of luck Jack

Hard to turn the steering wheel?

on the astro vans they used a hydroboost power brake booster which is driven off the power sterring pump. If you are having brake and steering problems you should check to make sure your belt is still on if it is you probably need a new powersteering pump. You may also check your power sterring pump pulley.if this helps please rate
