its irish then please accept my humble apologies ,a worthy job that milk deliveries ,well i hate to say it but but your gearbox will require a overhaul by the sound of it ,1/2 gear brake band is worn hence the jerky changes as for the noise in 4th then i would need a listen and a drive .In my time i worked on the electric milk floats for the london co-op ,And yes i have worked on auto transits as well as the ambulance service used them a lot .The only advice i can offer here is to look for a decent accident damaged car of the same age like a scorpio or whatever and change the gearbox from the car into the van as the local ford garage will know what gearboxes are interchangecable here ,offhand without the year i couldnt say ,but a older tranny from a zodiac or a granada will fit into a york 2.4 diesel and these dont need a fancy computer to work either ,

Mazda bravo b2600 gearbox growles and grumbles. cant select 2nd or 4th gear. 1st, 3rd,5th & reverse ok.

I am sorry to tell that the gearbox need to have some major repair. It is also not advisable to continue driving as the gearbox can breakdown completely leaving you stranded. At least one the cluster drive gears in the gearbox is damaged (gear tooth stripped off) that will result in that only some of the gears being able to be selected. The broken off tooth are still in the gearbox and due to the oil movement in the gearbox it can be "washed up " in between to engaged gears destroying those as well. This will happen up to the point where there are no gear selection at all.

My brother has a 80 with gearbox or transfer noise in it. Unfortunately I am not able to look at the vehicle and see for my self. The gearbox is grinding in 3rd 4th and 5th. 1st and 2nd ok. He said that he...

I suspect that there is a failed bearing on the output shaft or on the cluster shaft. This comes from the burnt oil condition which happens when a bearing is over heating due to failure and the gears not aligned when trying to change gears.

Loud clicking noise coming from engine when at high rpms. I have a stick. The noise happens just as I'm about to shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th. Doesn't happen much in 4th gear or...

sounds like the rockers or lifters have some play due to wear.you don`t say what rpm you are shifting at other than high rpm.by changing the oil you have increased the viscosity of the oil as its new and not dirty and thin and cold oil is thicker than warm oil.you might want to try a heavier oil to see if it helps.you may not get this noise out unless you replace components or adjustment of rockers if they are adjustable.if its not very bad you may have to live with it.

1st 2nd 3rd gear whining noise but stops in 4th and so on,

this would be an internal bearing inside the gearbox on the input shaft......you have the shft coming in form the engine, and the input shaft houses 1,2, 3rd and 4th gears.....the 5th gear is located on an intermediate shaft.....and then you have the output shaft...now if you had said all gears i would have said output shaft bearing......and if you had said 5th gear only, then this would be the intermedaite gear.....

but you are only saying 1,2 and 3......why its not happening in fourth is that the gear ratios that the shafts turn in correlation to thre gearing changes as you get to 4, like on a 10 speed bicycle but in 4th it is a 1:1 ratio, so no excessive loads on the shafts are noticeable....

This will require a transmission overhaul......

Ford transmission wines in 1st 2nd 3rd revers, no

It is a 5 speed manual transmission? If it is noisey in all gears except for 4th, then the problem is countershaft bearings.
