My starter went out on my 1988 chevy c15 with a 350, replaced starter but still won't crank. the starter is popping out to engage but is not cranking, any ideas? The battery is new.
This procedure usually works:
·Check the battery cable connections:
Make sure the negative cable makes a good ground connection at the battery and (preferably) at the engine. Make sure the positive cable, makes a good connection at the battery and at the starter.
·Check the battery the simple way, like this:
Turn on the headlights, then try to start the car.If the headlights do not dim or go out, then the battery is likely ok.
·Check the starter and solenoid:
If the wiring looks ok, then look at the starter solenoid for a good connection, and proper voltage at the starter(10 volts minimum while cranking).
If the starter spins and no crank, the problem is most likely the Solenoid's pinion gear is stuck.
Have someone hit (not too hard) the starter while you try to start the car. This usually works by dislodging a stuck pinion gear.
·Make a simple test of the alternator:
If you can, somehow get the engine running, measure the voltage at the battery. It should be at least 13.6 volts to properly charge the battery.

Have you tested or replaced the starter relay? How are the fuses?
Do you have metal to metal contact on all battery connections? Have you tested the solenoid?
SOURCE: replace the battery on my 1988 chevy truck and now
where did you re hook the ground cable? sounds like you left the body ground off and that wil keep it from starting
SOURCE: Have replaced the starter solenoid, spark plugs,
If you haven't already done so, replace the distributor cap and rotor. There is most likely corrosion inside the cap that is causing a crossfire condition.
This is a common problem on that engine.
Don't know why being hot would aggravate it, but start with the cap.
try locking your car with the key and unlocking it with the key, leave it for 30 second or so between the locking and unlocking , the car thinks some one has tampered with it

it could be multiple things, like .spark plugs. air filters. computers. fuel filters, and all kinds of different things

Haven't tried the cap and rotor yet, body ground is attached, have not tested the starter relay (not sure how to do that) fuses are all good, and there appears to be good contact on the connections. I am thinking the solenoid on the starter (new one) may be bad.
By the way, the starter sounds like it tries to engage it is just not turning the engine over at all. No cranking.
check relay ,cap rotor and spark plugs could be too.
