win xp is 10 years out of date so you have lost the driver for the printer by the upgrade If you go to the hp web site there may be still a down load for your model printer that is compatible to win xp if so select that and down load it run the down load when asked AS win xp , win 7 are both out of date and no longer supported by Microsoft you should consider installing win 10

Sounds like the main circuit board fried. You can't repair it, thus replacement is the only option. That will not guarantee normal operation and your taking a chance one way or the other.

Unless you get all of the paper particles out of the intake rollers and gears, you will have existing problems. The speed and motion is effected and there are tiny activation switches that tell the scanner light to make a pass and when to stop. If you cannot clean out left over debris then have a technician do it for you.

Contact HP for warranty services, if it's still new and covered. You will likely get a replacement unit or factory refurbished replacement. If out of warranty you will likely have to buy a new one.

Download the lastest driver and software. Remove the old driver and software Reinstall new.

Clean the little glass part on the scanner. That part has residue on it causing your problem. Use a lint free cloth and water.

You have a dirty glass. Take a lint free cloth and water and wipe the glass making sure you leave no streaks behind. Sometimes you have to take a flashlight and examine the glass. Just a little spec, the laser will drag all the way down.

Install the drivers for it from the HP website. Other software for it should be there as well. As to scanning speed, setting it to scan at lower resolutions can speed scanning. Scanning for color is slower than scanning for Black and White, FYI.

According to the manual, you should always scan from the HP scanning software to scan slides using Scanjet transparent material adapter. There is no button that you can set for default slide scanning properties. This is shown on page 8 of the manual for the 3500 series scanners. Since the scanner works with pictures, make sure that the TMA adapter is plugged into the back of the scanner. Next open the software, HP Photo & Imaging Director. In most versions of Windows, press Start and look for the HP programs heading. Expand this to find the executable file. Alternatively, find the icon on the desktop or find the software in the file explorer (Program Files/HP/ on 32-bit versions, Program Files (x86)/HP) and then the appropriate sub-folder. if you still have the installation disc for the printer use it when adding a printer to the win 7 os or go to hp download site and download the drivers for the printer or may be go to the printer properties tab , click on compatibility and tick the box and high light win7 os and apply
