I pulled all the covers off and blew it out. Even took apart the top scanner cover and blew that out as well. After reassembling, it is working fine. This error can be caused by a mechanical problem during the return of the shade. After many attempts, problem was fixed cutting both springs from pressure roll behind reading unit. The amount of spring removed changed from machine to machine. I cut 1 quarter of turn from spring and test the scanner. Procedure was repeated until problem was fixed. In worst scenario 2 turns were cutted. Be aware that cutting these springs will affect the scanned image quality.
Uninstall all drivers and scanning software. Switch off the comp and Scanner, restart the scanner first and then the computer, reinstall drivers and scanning software. Pls run scandisk on the Computer and ensure the OS is okay.

I have many years repairing canon scanners so here if my suggestion for you.
You will need to open the scanner up by lifting up the top portion of the scanner like you were going to remove a jammed piece of paper in it. The large green button on the left side of the scanner (with the scanner powered on) hold down and count to 10 very slowly. You should see to white strips pop up out of the scanner. One on the top and one on the bottom. If they don't pop up that will tell you which motor is bad the bottom or the top one. If they do pop up look at them closely you will see specks of dirt on them causing them not to function correctly. Get a bottle of Fantastic or 409 your choice and a terry cloth wash cloth. Spray the wash cloth with either the fantastic or 409 until its very wet. Then gently rub across the white strips until all signs of dirt are removed then dry them off by rubbing them with the dry part of the wash cloth you are using. If its just dirt on the shader's your problem will be gone. If one of them do not pop up then you will need to contact your local canon dealer to have a replacement motor installed.
A 'Driver' is only the software portion to connect two hardwares. You need to install a printer driver for Printer, or a DVD driver for a DVD drive. Similarly, the scanner driver just connects the scanner to the computer.
You need to use a Scanning software to use the scanner. Canon offers CapturePerfect 3, using which you scan documents, do rotation, convert to PDF etc. CP3 has option to detect the page size. CP2 is available free of cost from Canon sites. CP3 comes with the scanner.

I would completely uninstall the software, unhook the hardware, reinstall software toy around with the program a bit at this point. If the software states it WILL scan in color, I would go to Manufacturers site and download the latest version of the software.
Clean the rubber rollers (pickup and ******) with a damp cloth, loosen the papers to be scanned. Clean all the rollers in the scanning path. What is the eror that is displayed? Download the user manual from this site http://www.usa.canon.com/opd/controller?act=OPDSoftwareAct&fcategoryid=2341&modelid=11293 (5010um.pdf). Change the rollers if they are old.

I havent used Canon 2580C and hence cant comment on Scan Panel. But you can download SU5000 or Captureperfect 2.0 from Canon website (http://software.canon-europe.com/). This is easy to use and probably offers more features as compared to ScanPanel. Canon 5010C is a higher model as compared to 2589C and Captureperfect may offer better user interface.

Are other formats, like JPG, working okay? Unselect multiple pages so that you get on image per sheet. Reinstall scanning software after a 'scandisk' command.
The issue at hand here is a sensor error. Cut the power to the machine for at least five seconds. Then reboot the scanner and the sensors should reboot. This solved the problem for us. Good luck to you.
