My printer says "Near Empty Black" on its display screen. I then changed the empty cartridge and but in a full one. However, it still says Near Empty Black, despite turning the printer on and off, opening and closing the cover, and reinserting the ink cartridge to make sure it was in correctly.
At the same time, I experience a printing error. Whenever a print a document, an error occurs while receiving the data and it will only print the top of the page.
What's going wrong and how can I fix it?

unplug maqchine from power. take all carts out. wait 5 minutes. connect machine to power. insert carts as demanded. give the right answer if machine asks if the carts are changed. machine will do some cleaning.
do you use generic ink? in that case you might have clogged the printhead with wrong ink. The ph cant be cleaned anymore.
nevertheless try this (carts should be nearly full!):
press menue then start mono (blue copy) then fourtimes arrow up. machine will be in maintenance mode. press 7 then 6 then 4. Machine will display init_all. press start mono. machine will refill tubes and
ph with fresh ink and do some cleaning. after that press 7 then 6 then 3 and start mono. machine will do a powerpurge.
press zero then 9 to do a quality test print. If it cant do the job leave maintenance by pressing 9 then 9. do the test print manually by pressing ink etc.
If you still do not see any colors the ph is clogged and cant be fixed anymore. It has to be replaced.
SOURCE: Brother MFC-420CN color ink empty but want to print/copy in B&W
brother won't print od do anything is one of the 4 inks are empty so first of all you have to replace whatever is empty, when you remove it it will ask you if you changed it and if it is a new one you will press 1 twice per cartridge, if you put compatible ink in you will clog the ink head up and then be stuffed
SOURCE: Screen reads "Near empty Cyan" but I just replaced the Cyan ink cartridge, its full.
If the firmware update doesn't work, you can reset this error.
Unplug unit. Remove offending cartridge. Plug unit back in, wait until
all startup noises have stopped. Open lid and reinstall cartridge. This
will solve the fault as long as the sensor is working.
Also, please be aware, you should not have to change a cartridge if it says "Near Empty", only if it says "Ink Empty Magenta".
Also, please make sure none of your other cartridges are empty. I have
seen this over and over. Two cartridges empty at the same time, and the
person replaces one of them but thinks they actually replaced the other
one.
Turn the power off and pull all the cartridges out. Look a the side of
the cartridge, you should see a window with a little plastic tab
sticking out. This tab should be blocked by a black float inside the
cartridge. If you cannot see the float, and the tab is clear with no
ink in it and no float tab blocking it, it means the cartridge is empty
even if you still see some ink in the bottom.
To be sure plug the machine in without any cartridges. When all the
noises have stopped, open the lid and install the cartridges. If you're
still getting an error saying either a cartridge is not installed or is
empty, then one of your cartridges is empty. Redo the previous
paragraph.

At 1 of the end sides of the cartage you will see a little window, a beam of light hits that window to determine if you need Ink..Place a small piece of Electric tape over that window and.wallah print, fax and copy away. Brother is a ripoff-A cheap printer that auto-cleans(wastes ink) and locks the whole system claiming your out of Ink or low>>>But this is sure to work! ;)
