If plugged in the first time, the external drive needs to be initialized from your computer. Here are the steps.

1. Plug in your external drive to your computer's usb port.
2. Right click your My Computer and choose Manage.
3. Click on the Disk Management from the left. The list of available drives will show on the right.
4. Right click on your External drive and select create partition (primary partition).
5. After that you now you need to format the hard drive. Choose quick format.
6. Right click again on the partition you've just created, now select "Format" and select NTFS.
7. Click Ok and follow the wizard as it will guide you until it is finished.

Hope this helps.

Hello sir, hi and good day, there are several reasons why an external drive cannot be recognize by the PC, here are some possibilities:

  1. Compatibility issues, make sure your PC is USB 2.0.
  2. Defective USB cable.
  3. Bad USB port, check other USB slots if it works.
  4. incorrect device driver, well most USB devices are ready for windows, but check if there is a CD accompanied with your USB drive. If there is a CD, run the device driver.
  5. Your PC is too old, like running on windows ME, atleast you are/or should be using windows XP.
  6. USB port is not enable on the Bios setup.
  7. Your MAXTOR device itself is bad, so check it on other PC to see if it will work.
If things are still out, try cleaning or running an Antivirus software on your PC. call your dealer for information on the installation of the product.

HI,

What I would suggest, is to take the drive and install it as a slave drive. Make sure your pin settings on the drive are set to slave, and your main drive is set to slave. Then XP and Vista will recongize it so you can pull the data off it, then reformat the drive and see if you get any errors.

Good Luck

reseat cables to make sure the connection is solid and try connecting to a different usb port on the computer or try connecting it to a different computer. If you still can't see the drive after that, it's probably gone bad.

Maxtor One Touch II - installation Software

I have a disk that worked for me and I am running windows xp. I also have the website address that is supposed to have the 98 drivers which could work perhaps. http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Maxtor_OneTouch_Drive_USB/Win98SE_Driver&vgnextoid=b07d8b9c4a8ff010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Guess you could try them first and if that doesnt work I could perhaps make a backup of the disk/package/mail/ worth anything?

Maxtor One-Touch 4 750gb power light flashes and goes out straight away.

Try to remove the drive and connect it directly to another computer.
If still doesn't spin up then most likely the board has failed.

Have you tried right clicking on the drive and going into properties. Click on security option and make sure that all the permissions for the drive are active with the exception of special permissions. Also look at the advanced security settings and make sure that you have full control permissions. Hope this helps.
