Old Maxtor/New Maxtor

If files you are trying to restore are encrypted you will have to use same software to retrieve them.. If not, any file in the external hard drive should be viewable with your windows explorer. And U do not need drivers for external hard drives. They just plug into your usb port and work with modern OS after the unit is recognized.

Computer says "please insert disk" when I try to

chances are it's not formatted or possibly not partitioned.
I don't know which OS you are running, so I'll try to be semi-generic with the instructions.
Click START then RUN and enter diskmgmt.msc
find the 300GB drive (it may not have a drive letter)
if the drive has no drive letter, right click the unallocated space and create a partition.
If there is a drive letter on it, right click the partition and click format.

That should FixYa right up.

If you have any problems, let me know more info like what OS you are running etc. and where you're getting stuck.

Cant find the cord in my clutter of cords, what

You want a cable with a Series A plug one end, to plug into your computer, and a Series B on the other, a square plug with 2 edges beveled so it's a D shape for the hard drive.

The cable type is commonly also used for connecting printers.

This site www.accesscomms.com.au/reference/usb.htm has some pictures.

MY MAXTOR ONE TOUCH 3

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

The computer suddenly won't read

If u are connecting it on the front usb
Try to connect at the rear usb. If it doesnot work then you have to check in device manager wheather the usb is disabled or not. If it is ok here then go to registry bu typing regedit in run window.

Go to HKLM---System-----Services-----usbstor

in that start value should be 3.

If it is 4 then change it to 3.

Would like to erase 150gb

Connect the drive.
Open "My Computer".
Right-mouse click on the icon for the Maxtor.
Click FORMAT.
Choose Quick-Format.
When it completes (in a few seconds), all the files on the disk will be "gone",
because a "blank" Table-Of-Contents has replaced the previous Table-Of-Contents.

My 500g external hard drive wont let me open the

Hello

Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.

Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external , go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".

If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.

Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.

Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.

  1. The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
  2. The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
  3. The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem. On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be free.

The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.

The last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.

A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.

I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.

Kind Regards
Andrea

My computer does not recognize

If you get no joy using the Troubleshooting Guide then try this...
You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismantle of your External HDD. Connections for an Internal Laptop HDD may have same connections as P.C. not sure though.
Once your happy that it has continue reading and follow the step guide on the link below.
My neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not recognized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). You maybe in luck click this link, you may have to register in the forums to view thread.... http://www.yo-lid.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=84 Thread can be found in 'Technical' under 'General Technical Issues',
Only attempt this option if you have important information saved in it, you will find that you will be charged by your product makers for retrieval of any information saved on your product.
Thumbs up please if it's any use to you Thank you.

Maxtor one touch storage malfunction

ok for one ( storage is just that its storage ) it doesn't have
anything to do with your OS and the registry , everything
on your computer runs through the operating systems
registry , static storage does not run through the registry
static storage should never have an operating system
installed on it , ( its the only way to keep viruses out )
also it should never be turned on while booting and
restarting , BIOS figures what is on and running on
a computer since this is a HDD your BIOS will calculate
it as being a viable HDD , which will confuse the registry
, for one thing RAM is not really memory when you remove
RAM it doesn't take any data with it , it doesn't store any
data , RAM simply installs an image of the data on the HDD
once this image is damaged the HDD will have to go through a reformat ( hence loosing all data ) its a common mistake that
people make with their static storage devices , if you reboot
a computer that uses a static storage device and id turned on
while the computer is booting a registry entry will be allocated
to that drive , its a windows root file that can never be removed
unless the drive is reformatted the folder has a long number
attached and will be in the number one position on the static
HDD , the folder can not be removed or moved copied or deleted
since its a registry entry the HDD image is at risk of corruption
you can try to rename the drive to its original assignment letter
turn off the static drive and reboot , after rebooting turn on the
storage drive and see if its accessible , Note: there are only two types of files that can be saved on a static storage HDD 1. media
files such as music movies PDFs videos photos Etc. 2. program
executibles ( your programs ) using a one touch back up is
strangely incorrect , it backs up your documents folder which
is a folder that runs through the OS registry so it will save stuff
that is not needed or can be used later , keep in mind that the
only things you'll want to keep are the things that you pay for
like your programs and memories and entertainment as well
as work , if it runs through your OS registry you can not keep
it , so half of the documents folder is copy and paste and the
rest runs through the registry
