Did you ever get a resolution to your problem? I have exactly the same problem with same error message - and very loud clicking noises coming from the scanner. Powering it down - allowing it to "cool" for 5 minutes will get probably 1 or 2 documents through the scanner before the error message reappears. But this is only a workaround rather than a solution.
Smile...well this is due to a default setting in windows which u need to change. 1. leave the device plugged to the USB & power it 2. Go to device manager \ expand (+) universal serial bus controllers 3. Right-click \ properties \ usb root hub \Power management tab \ uncheck box (allow the computer to switch off the device)
Go to this link and type "cannot communicate with scanner" in the search box. Click Search. Then select the "ERROR: Cannot communicate with scanner" link. You will see several things to try to correct your problem. Usually, this error shows up if there is another USB device connected which prevents the computer from "seeing" the scanner, even though it can print without problem. So do try to disconnect any other USB device (except mouse or keyboard) and reboot the system.
Had same problem with the 'release the lock switch' garbage. Didn't know where the faaaark the sodding release switch was anyway but gave the scanner a good whack on each of the front corners.....problem fixed.
If the unit is in warranty, get Epson out to it.
If not check the simple things like making sure the head lock is not on. Look to see if the scanner head starts to move at all when you power up the unit. If the head does not move at all or makes an unusual noise, chances are the unit is complaining that the head is stuck or requires too much effort to move it.
Other possibilities include a communication error between scanner and main board of the SPC or SPC and your computer - indicates broken connection or bad USB cable. POssibly a fault with the mainboard of the SPC itself.
