You will most likely find that the FAU cable that connects the lift up lid part to the lower part of the scanner has at least one fractured wire within it. There are eight quite fine wires and the constant opening and closing of the lid has caused this to occur. Unless you have some micro-surgery skills and a small soldering iron it's off to the scanner shop, I'm afraid.

'Tain't necessary. And not getting the part can be an improvement. I cut out a cardboard template that allows me to scan 10 slides rather than the 4 of Canon's official slide adapter. All the Canon part does is position them precisely so cropping and rotation are automatic. With Photoshop skills (File ' Automate), you can do the same yourself for whatever size. I ended up doing Brownie, 35, and 126 (gasp!) also. For extra credit, make your adapter(s) out of genuine plastic rather than whatever cereal box you have lying around.

If it passes 'test' from the computer, then it should be listed in the Device Manager. Uninstall / Remove that device, then Restart and Re-install it. Tallon41

First thing you'll want to do is reboot and try again. If you do that and you still get the same thing, then you'll need to see what other programs may be running, Ctrl+Alt+Del and then Task Manager (assuming you're in Windows) to see what other programs are running. Close other running programs. Yoiu may also need to identify any hardware or software that you may have recently installed (especially other scanning or TWAIN devices such as scanners, All-in-one devices, digital cameras, web cam, etc.). You may need to uninstall and reinstall the scanner software, though I wouldn't expect that to cause the scanner to be busy.

Unfortunately, you can't get one from Canon or at least that's what they told me when I called them a few minutes ago. I can't find mine right now and wanted to replace it, but haven't figured out how to. If you do find a replacement, I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd let me know.

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

Another thing is this can be caused by a faulty FAU cable. One or more of the eight wires within this cable has fractured

Photoshop ELements 4 is not made for 10.6. It will not work reliably (If at all). Buy Elements 8. It's much better too.

Ok replacing the lamp is easy, simply take apart the case halves, locate the lamp,undo the fixtures, unplug the lamp from the circuit board, do NOT touch the lamp, use gloved hands. plug back in again, reafix the attachments and put the case back together, now test the unit. You must be sure it is the lamp though, and Not the circuit driving it,as this often goes faulty, and NOT the lamp. you need to test the lamp with a meter and see if it has a reading if open circuit, it's faulty, if not, then it's the driver, or even perhaps the USB interface, or whatever controls it. I have given you a service manual, above, this will give you an idea.

Check on the canon website for software or drivers, or try image capture in applications.

Update the drivers, sometimes they become corrupted and will not work untill they are updated. Click on the link below and then select the first link on top "8400F Scanner Driver Ver. 10.2.2.0a_xp" (Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000) and after you update, restart your computer.

That gives the drivers only if I read it correctly. You should be able to use either Windows Fax and Scan or Paint to actually acquire the scans. If you want the Toolbox, you can try to see if the Vista version will load.
