Printer worked fine, but the belt wore out, so we replaced it. But now during start up it results in an awful noise and an error. Checked the belt, making sure it is installed properly with the teeth on the inside. Also checked the clutch system and to be sure lubricated it. It starts up and starts moving the carriage slowly to detect the sides of the printer. This works fine. It finds the right side, and the left side. Then it parks the carriage on the left side, after which it should start moving at regular speed. At that point the noise occurs and the error: The error is: "Check printhead path (Type 1)". Also, the noise is not coming from the clutch but from the engine that drives the belt (on the right side). I guess the engine runs and the ribs on the drive and the belt rubbing against each other are producing the noise... This is a *loud* noise, not some light scraping of hoses or the print head. So, either the print head is somehow "stuck" and cannot be pulled out of its position. But this is weird, because if I pull on the belt manually, the carriage comes out without much friction at all. Any suggestions are welcome

The printhead not moving to the left I think I can solve. Open the top cover, the yellow light on the paper feed button wil come on solid, press and HOLD this button until you hear the print head assembly make some noises (about 10 to 20 seconds) then release the button and then the printheads will move and park on the left so you can remove the printhesd(s)
SOURCE: weird noise from printer carriage
The loud clicking noise is probably the carriage trying to move and something is keeping it from doing so. Check to see there are no foriegn objects obstructing the carriage head from moving across the paper.
If nothing is found, then likely a hardware error exists.
hope this helps!
SOURCE: How do you clear printhead path Type (1)
the carriage slide bar has no oil on it.using your finger apply some sewing machine oil to the bar

it seems like there is no oil on the slide bar

Upon power up, does the machine move the carriage assembly from one side to the other?
Generally, any message like that means the belt has a few teeth missing or is worn. The belt drives the carriage assembly to and fro. If the machine detects a slow down or stop, it will have you check the printhead path for obstructions. If there aren't any, then 9 times out of 10 it is a worn belt. Check for little pieces of black rubber under the belt and encoder strip.
I have also seen 2 other fixes: a dirty encoder strip (the plastic strip with little hash marks on it) and a faulty cutter. But most of the time it is the belt.
