Nortel IPSEC VPN unable to connect via a Belkin N1 Wireless Router

I recently bought a Belkin N1 Wireless router, F5D8231-4 v4000, to replace a Belkin 802.11b router. Hooked everything up and got it running with no problems, except now my Nortel VPN client will not connect for work. I am able to access the Internet from the laptop but when I try to connect the VPN client it times out. I have put the Laptop in the DMZ and I have disabled the firewall but nothing works. Also I can ping the VPN switch via the domain name and IP address. Belkin Tech support has been useless so anything anyone knows would be grately appriciated!

There is no Port Forwarding optoin on this router. I have tried to open the upd port 500 and 10000 on the router firewall but that did not work. I have also disabled the firewall and placed the laptop in the DMZ, both solutions did not work either. I think it has something to do with the IPSEC pass thru within the firmware but I cannot find a way to change a setting for that and I have to latest firmware update. 3 days ago this was escalated to Belkin Tier 3 support but no call from them yet.

I was finally able to get Belkin Level 3 Tech Support to call me. What we ended up doing was taking my Old 802.11b router and connecting to the Internet with it. Then changed the IP address on the N router. This now made the N router function as just a wireless switch on the network. Once we did that everything worked fine. I asked the guy what would I do if my old router dies and he said Belkin would send me a hard wired router. Sounds like they have seen this before and they also know it is a problem. Anyway I am up and running again so that is a good thing!

If you read the comments I have posted I have done all of the optoins you listed. None of them worked. Also I have spoked with Belkin and we came up with a work around and I am thinking this is a known issue with Belkin since the Tech that finally called me seemed to know exactly what to do and when I asked about what happens if my old router fails he said Belkin would send me a hard wired router for free.

This router is a pile of junk. I cannot use the version 4 firmware since I have a version 2 router and there is no firmware that supports vpn passthrough yet.

I tried getting hold of support but they cannot help me. What should I do?

I bought belkin N1 Wireless router and set it up but, the problem I have is only one user in my office can connect to our remote VPN server, the rest can not.

I'm using this device as my internet router, the older one I was using was Linksys and I didn't have any problem whatsoever with connecting to VPN.

    Can anyone help????????

It's June of 08 and I'm still waiting for a solution from Belkin for the N1/VPN connection problem. Anything moving on this?

Finally got around to upgrading the firmware, that fixed up but now my company uses different VPN client so it was not an issue anymore. Thanks for finding it!

I had the same problem connecting to my corporate network via Cisco VPN through a Belkin N1 wireless router (model # F5D8231-4). Had similar useless support from Belkin, but got it to work thanks to the suggestions listed here, namely:

    1. Disable the Firewall on the router

    2. Upgrade the Firmware to F5D8231-4 WW v4.00.18

Just upgraded from old belkin 802.11G modem/router to N1 vision modem/router. Everything worked fine until attempting to connect to work via Nortel VPN. Cannot connect to VPN at all. Changed back to old router working fine. Attempted port fwd, DMZ etc... all failed.

  • kingboat May 11, 2010

I tried upgrading the firmware but it was stop suddenly and the error message I got was; you are trying to install an incompatible software. The router rebooted and went back to the same old story.

Please am stacked and can not do anything, frustration is setting in now.......need your help asap

Am using N1 Wireless Router F5D8231-4 Ver 5000

StarCatZ,

I was just talking to the Tech Support in Belkin and I have to say that I focking hate with a passion. I am in your same position (ver.2) and all they could tell me is that they dont support VPN and that they cant help me. I am so pissed. They are so damn dumb it just makes me mad.

I am going to try and get mine replaced for a newer version with hope that that might fix my issue. good luck!

How do I enable IPSEC Passthrough on this wireless router?

look in the settings of the Belkin to see if you can enable VPN Pass-through.

Try disabling some of the firewall functions on the belkin to isolate the issue and turn the rest back on.

If for some reason this model doesn't work even after the above, try changing the VPN client's connection settings, there are only two to choose from... (click modify on your connection entry, go to the Transport tab > then choose from:
IPSec over TCP and IPSec over UDP (port 10000)

First thing to try is making sure you have the latest firmware on the router. If you have not logged into it before you need to type http://192.168.2.1 in your browser address bar and log in when prompted. The router by default does not have a password set so it might be worth setting one in system settings. You should find on the menu an option to update the firmware. Read the screen should guide you how do this. If the firmware is up-to-date and you still have a problem try disabling your firewall on the pc to see if it's getting in the way. Don't leave the firewall off if you find it's causing the problem you just have to work out how to configure it to allow the traffic out. The route should allow this traffic out by default.

Nortel Contivity VPN client?

Nortel Contivity will work with the your D-Link router, however its functionality depends on the authentication type (AH will not work), NAT compatibilty mode, and disabling keep alives on the server. Contact your Network Administrator to find out how your VPN is configured. Step 1 Verify that you are using the latest version of firmware on your router. Step 2 Login to the Web Management for your router by entering its IP address (192.168.0.1) in your web browser. The default username is admin, and the password is blank. Step 3 Click the Advanced Tab to access the Virtual Server Settings. There is a list of pre-defined Virtual Server Rules towards the bottom of the page. Find the IPSec Rule. Click the pen and paper icon to edit its settings. Enable the rule, enter the IP address of the computer attempting to connect to the VPN in the Private IP field, then Apply the changes. Step 4 Create a new Virtual Server entry. Name the Virtual Server, "NortelVPN". Enter the IP address of the computer attempting to connect to the VPN in the Private IP field. For the Protocol Type, select Both. Enter 9550 for both the Public and Private Ports. Set the Schedule to always, then Apply the settings. Step 5 Access the Tools Page, then click the Misc button. Disable IPSec Pass-through, then click Apply. If the VPN Server is properly configured to work with clients behind NAT routers you should be able to connect to the VPN.
