Clog somewhere. There may be a " secondary filter" that needs to be replaced. It may be there to "protect" the motor and blower.
Check Owner's manual and it's troubleshooting. Customer service is usualy helpful if you email or call.

Hello. While the cleaner is running, turn it upside down under water and check to see that the turning brush moves into the "down" position with in about two minutes. Here is a link to the manual to explaint this further. http://www.starite.com/pdf/S364(12-3-03).PDF

If it is working properly it will clean the pool floor but it is not designed to clean steps.

It may well need the gear you speak about. Confirm that with the great white technician at 800-752-0183

Look for a crack across the fitting.
