Document jam my fax continue to say paper jam but there is no paper in the machine

  • Anonymous Dec 19, 2008

I have the same problem with the machine indicating a paper jam. This is the second time for me. I called the factory and was told that it was not worth fixing. Bought a new machine and now 6 months later and very little use - yep - paper jam.

I had this totally annoying problem this morning. After looking for any obvious paper jams or small bits of loose paper, I tried several fixes: 1) open front cover, release levers that hold white rollbar in place, roll the bar forward to make sure nothing is stuck behind it, snap levers back in place; DID NOT fix the problem; 2) open top cover, remove print cartridge, look for jammed paper bits, close cover; DID NOT fix the problem; 3) unplug the machine, wait a few minutes, turn machine back on; DID NOT fix the problem. I even unplugged the machine, opened ALL the covers, turned the machine upside down and shake it to see if any paper clips, staples, or other objects have fallen inside the machine; DID NOT fix the problem. FINALLY, I pulled the paper feed tray forward, reached down to the feed rollers, twisted them a few turns, put paper back in the machine, and the "paper jam" message disappeared! This may not work for everyone, but it worked for me today, so I hope this helps someone out there to have a better day.

SOURCE: Machine won't draw the paper in to send the fax

Technically, your machine is jammed. The paper is jamming as it exits the feed area, and enters the machine. Not being specifically familiar with that model, but rather based on experience with other simular machines with like problems, I would say you should look for 3 possible causes... Most machines have, shortly into the paper path, and generally in the area you're indicating, some sort of sensor switch, whether it be photo-electric, or a mechanically activated toggle, that senses and registers the lead edge of the paper so the machine knows it did feed. This switch could be knocked out of place, or simply dirty, and not sensing the lead edge of the paper within a certain period of time after the machine registers the feed had been actuated. A second possible cause would be (and you may be able to visually verify this) is that usually, in these types of machines, there is some sort of pressure or "retard" pad/roller in conjunction with the feed roller. If this isn't working right, the machine may be feeding more than one sheet at a time, and becoming jammed in the paper path path area due to "thickness". A third possible issue could be an unremoved scrap of paper from a previous jam (or a staple/paperclip/piece of rubber-band/or any other foriegn object, as I've seen them all) still remaining in a thin and obscure position of the paper path blocking the paper's progress to the afformentioned switch. Those are the most likely, but probably not the only possible, causes of the problem you are exoeriencing.

SOURCE: "document jammed" but no paper in the machine

There are a few sensors in the paper path which can easilt dislodged when pulling paper to rapidly from unit. Check all sensor flags and make sure they are moving freely.

SOURCE: Jammed document

I believe that this is a board level problem as I have seen many 1040's with this very same problem and I have taken them apart and cleaned and reconditioned the rubber rollers that feed the paper thru with no real luck. I have also noted that the sensor that detects the paper does not appear to be functioning either when activated or deactivated the srror state does not change. I therefore feel that this is a main board defect.

Up to two pages can be force fed through before the machine stops taking the pages and a paper jam error report is generated.

Inside the document feeder are two small levers near the middle of the paper path. One will be near the first roller to tell the machine that there's a sheet waiting to be pulled. The other will be an inch or two farther in, to tell it the paper has reached the scanner glass. If one of those levers is sticky, the machine will "think" it's feeding a very long continuous sheet. After a couple of feet or so, it reaches its programed limit and gives up to prevent tying up the phone line on an endless fax call when the document is jammed.

Open the feeder, find those levers, and make sure they move at the slightest touch. If one won't pop back up every time, it will give the symptoms you described. It may be as simple as a tiny scrap of paper wrapped over it, jamming it in its slot.

If the levers move freely, you may have a bad optical sensor underneath.

Machine reads "document jammed"

its the problem of the rollers which pulls the papers they r worn out.I've seen this before repairing computers and asked about fax machines while I am there. There are rollers that cling on to the paper and move it through the machine. When the rollers are worn down they do not grip the paper. For a short fix you can get something rough like sandpaper, brillo pad, etc, and gently scratch the rollers to give them some traction. This will temporarily solve your problem until you can get the rollers replaced.

Hi. Open the document control panel and look in with a flashlight and see if the jam switch is stuck. also look for a small piece of paper that might be stuck in there. The jam is in where you put documents in to fax out. Lawrence
