You don't necessarily need your printer connected to your PC to install the driver. The driver installation is so that your PC can communicate with the specified printer. If you have the install CD you can install the driver and software. Now Depending on your printing machine, some installation CD's will ask you to please connect your Printer. If this is the case, there really is no way around that because the installation directions wont let you proceed to the next step without doing that. Each printer and its installation software have different protocols. Some will let you install without the printer being connected, some wont. Don't get mad ... you don't connect A to B with a CD ... you must use a printer cable. You probably need a printer style USB, or other style cable, available at the big box store or even K-mart. You will probably receive advertisements for such when you get this answer.
You don't mention the make or model of the computer OR the printer nor what operating system you are using ... making it difficult to provide assistance ...
May I suggest you go to the printer manufacturers site look for customer support or download, search your model and find your driver in the list provided.
remove everything (printer wise) through the device manager. reboot with the printer attached. see if windows will install it without the CD. (What version are you using)
If windows asks for the CD and will not go on without it ... insert the CD and see what happens
After downloading is finished, unplug the printer USB and run the
software that you downloaded. The software installer will tell you when
to connect USB.
If you have Windowx XP or Vista, you will not require installation CD. Connect the printer and the operating system will detect and install the printer.
