It is possible with an appropriate software (like Nero) and a cable to fit into your computer's video port.

It sounds like the image sensor (CCD) is bad. See this link for Canon's service advisory on this issue. Canon will replace the image sensor at no cost, regardless of warranty status if they determine this is the problem.

Ok, let's try the "easy fixes" first. When this problem happens, it can be a oxidized power switch contact, or oxidized battery contacts on the camera. Clean the battery contacts and the contacts on the camcorder with an eraser gently (they are gold plated). See if the camcorder works now. The next step is only if you're not planning on taking the camcorder apart. There are times when you can give the camcorder a slightly hard "whack" with the palm of your hand, somewhere near the power switch, while the power switch is on, and if the camera works, then you know it's most likely a dirty or oxidized contact inside. See if you can get it working with these methods. If you can't, you will have to disassemble the camcorder or have it serviced. Get an estimate if you get it serviced, since it can be expensive, and you might just opt for a replacement.

There are several options to choose from regarding pointers and instructions. Note that video can only be transferred by Firewire, so you need a Firewire cable, a computer that is Firewire compatible, and software on your computer that can edit video. (The USB cable and the software that came with your camera can only handle still images you take with your camera, stored on the MMC/SD card.)

there is a cable you get with your camcorder that goes from camcorder to usb, depending what software cd you got with camcorder will decide on how it is transfered to pc. you can do it manually by entering directly into camcorders drive space from pc with cable and moving videos to a folder on you pc. the camera should show up in my computer when it has installed itself.

Always check the batteries first but if is it still giving the same fault, your camera is faulty.
It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts.

canon has released a service advisory on these camcorders and is currently repairing them free of charge if the problem is related to the ccd. contact canon in your country to request a repair

you need Firewire cable to firewire port on your computer

You need firewire (eee1394) to transfer video. If your computer doesn't have firewire, you will need to purchase a pci firewire card. the usb cable is only for the sd card

The usb port is for the memory card only....You will need a firewire to transfer over the DV tape.

If it is Canon ZR85 camcorder then it has ccd imager problem and ccd imager will be replaced. Canon will repair it free of cost for same problem.

I have 2 xelim camaras. One of which has a piece of some type of cover partially obstructing the view. This camara still displays the time and menus and older pictures. If I take pix now the picture is obscured. The other camara has no picture on the display but when I take a picture it turns out just fine. That camara will need disassembled and a connector hooked back up

Most screens on digital camaras are for aiming the camara and output (displaying the picture) therefore any problems with the screen do not translate to a picture.

I will take have to take it to a cannon technician and pay them to fix it
