TRY USING ANOTHER PLAYER IT MIGHT B YOUR CAM. TRY A HEAD CLEANER

Turns out many Canon camera's (both still and video) have an issue with the connection to the CCD. If it is related to this connection, Canon will fix it for free. I have shipped my camera to them and I'm awaiting confirmation that it is related. sometimes the flex for the lens comes loose and causes this problem or could be mainboard as well you could take it apart and check the flex for the lens just go slow and when you take the screws out map it next to the part so it will go back together right or if you dont want to do that send it to canon i do fix these and its 50 50 for the flex or main

I also have this cam corder when I turn it on I have a black screen both on vido and card can not see nothing play back is all right or what is on the tape on the screen in the lower left hand bottom corner is the word FERNAN what the heck is that like another person on hear I thought I pushed the rong button any one help love to hear from you thanks tom

Hi fleet, If your tape will not advance, rewind, and it wont come out i pretty sure its stucked, (maybe you inserted it wrong, somthing got stucked or it fall when the tape was in.)

First lets try somthing that will not make things worse for sure.
Try pressing the open button while your camera is up-side-down. Also try it side ways. If the cover dosent open, let me know.

I had the same problem. I bought a new battery and now the problem is gone.

I had a similar thing happen to me...the video would not come one when I turned it on, but the audio would work, and it would play back tape fine. I happened upon the following solution (though I don't know how long it will last). I charged the camera, and then noticed it worked fine when the charger was plugged in. As soon as I unplugged it, the video would go black. So...I plugged it in, turned it to record, and unplugged it, and it worked! Almost like something got reset. I have no idea how long this will last, or if it means the battery is going...but, give it a try!

usb port on this camera used for picture transfers, but to transfer videos, use FireWire DV cable, can be bought on ebay for a buck or so

you already answered your question. all you need is a firelink wire and a firewire port for your PC. you can check the prices online.I got mine from BestBuy and I use it for 3 years take care

Had the same problem, usually when trying to upscale video ! Try reducing size of video on laptop when using transfer software, see if that helps. With my aged laptop, problem seems to be because my laptop has an extremely slow processor chip, and it just can't keep up with the video ! The software I use, which is free, is Freemake Video Convertor, which gives you a choice of output formats and sizes.
