I think these firms who tell you silly prices for doing what is simple put these costs on because they dont want to do the work, I was told that a washer was going to cost me £190 on my bath taps, simply because I lived too far out of town and they did not want to take the job on.
By running your tape to and fro a bit (not too far) the door will open.

First thing, clean your battery contacts, both on the battery, and on the camcorder. Make sure the battery is charged fully (measure it if you have a voltmeter). Make sure your power adapter is putting out voltage (again, measure it if you can) Try a spare battery, if you have one, to make sure the first one isn't just dead. Other than those things, you could have a faulty or broken power switch on the unit. That's about all I can think of offhand.

Have you checked the battery is fully charged. Or tried it with a fresh battery. Most power problems start with the battery and if you don't have a known good spare then your local repair shop may have one you can try in the camera first. Before handing it over for a service. Maybe a friend has one they can lend you just to try it out. If you try that and still no go then I'd advise an authorised service technician look at it.

Sounds like a problem with the ejection system. Try PhotoTech Repair Service, in NYC. They are factory authorized for most repairs, and are able to do warranty service in house. You can ship them your unit and, they are usually faster than the manufacturer, and cheaper! Plus if you join their facebook fan page they give you a 10% discount.

The laser lens on the camera might need cleaning. Use a q-tip and 90% alcohol to clean it, then try it. If that doesn't help, try another disc. If that doesn't work, I'm afraid it might require servicing. Get a quote before you get it serviced, sometimes it's just better to buy another one. Good luck!

Does this happen on all dvs tapes? If so then it is a problem with the head reader of the cam, but if only one tape, then that tape is either has quite an old recording on it or the tape is damaged.

Fast forward or insert another tape. Then record something for 15-30 seconds. Then try your playback again. Worked for us.

Beleive the CCD has stopped responding. A cheap way to verify this is to point an infrared remote towards the lens and press a key. This will usually provoke a response from the camera even if all else fails, barring a bad pickup device...accordianman

Short answer is yes. I recently had a screen replaced on a HG10 HDD HD camcorder in the UK for about £100. You first point of call should be a Canon authorised repair centre for your country. Alternatively look on line for a camera repair centre on google.

There are probably problems with the software. Nothing really can be done. Best bet is to return or bye new camcorder.

Are you trying to do playback through firewire? or just the A/V cables? make sure there's no kinks or anything in the connection to cause an error. If that doesn't do anything then you might try a cleaning tape.to clean the head ,if the problem still persist then replace the battery
