5 W 30 for the oil and the 2.2 Ecotec engine takes 5.8 qts and the V6 3400 takes 4.5 qts as far as the oil filter also depends on the engine. the 2.2 takes a paper element. look to the right of the engine and you'll see a black round canister with a hex looking nut attached to the top. I belive it's 32mm. use an extension but be careful putting it back on because the cap is just plastic Do not overtightnen! just snug it up firmly

Synthetic is best but also $$$$$$. Just buy your oil from dealer, mine holds a hair under 4 qts (i use 4 qts) with filter. drain plug is under motor assy (bottom)

If you are installing a rebuilt transmission that is completely empty than it will use 8 us.qts of oil. The specs for the fluid type is Dextron 2 transmission oil. Depending on what engine this is, you should drain oil, change filter, add 3.75 qts of oil, then start engine to check for leaks. Turn engine off, then check the oil fill on the dipstick. Add to proper amount generally at 4 or 4.25 qts.

3.7 qts. for oil and filter change, highly recomend Rottella 5w40 synthetic can get a 4 qt. jug at walmart for 20 bucks. The trany,wet clutch and engine all use the same oil. This site is very helpful for filter http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html

You over filled it, depending on the type of dipstick you have, the oil is checked either on the side stand or with the bike upright. If you have the type of dipstick that is floppy (the stick part flops around) you have to check the oil while the bike is on the side stand.

Regardless Softtails hold 3 quarts of oil, if you add exactly 3 quarts after draining the oil bucket and changing the filter the oil level will be correct (unless the oil has sumped).

The other thing that happens sometimes when the bike sits for any period of time without running the oil can sump from the bucket into the engine crankcase. If this happens it will look like you are low on oil, so if you go adding oil and then run the bike it will unsump and overflow the bucket making a hell of a mess.
