Before you do anything with the ignition key check the gear shift lever is not stuck in gear or there is no problem with the transmission. I am assuming you have an automatic transmission.

The gear position P sensor might be faulty. There is an interlock between gear shift and the ignition switch.

Key stuck in the ignitin of a 2005 grand prix

Check to be sure your shift lever is all the way in the Park position. Move it up and down several times to be sure. If that doesn't work shift into neutral then move steering wheel side-to-side to be sure it isn't locked under tension. Place shifter back into Park position. If that doesn't work check all your fuses. There is a small safety switch located under the shifter boot. It is there to prevent the car from starting when not in Park. A blown fuse can cause it to stop working. If all else fails, remove boot and manually press this switch. If key comes out then that's your problem. Good luck.

My key is stuck in the ignitin and wat come out

The ignition key cannot be removed from the ignition switch, unless the shift lever is in Park. When the shift lever is in any position other than Park, a solenoid is activated, making it impossible for the key to be removed, until the shift lever is moved to Park.

2000 GMC Jimmy won't start

Hi: Have run into same type of problem, turned out to be a dead or very battery. Has nothing to do with the ignitin switch. With a low battery have also had trouble getting the key out of a 95 Jimmy. Boost unit to get running then discommect battery, if unit stall right away replace alternator, if stays running replace battery. If you get the unit runnimg and try to drive it as is you should find lacks power and wants to stall.

The ignition switch needs to be replaced, but i cannot get the key to turn to put the new switch in. Any suggestions on getting the key to turn

use a cordless drill to drill the lock cylinder out.a 3/8 bit will provide enough clearance to remove the lock assembly.
