No the check engine light is only for emissions issues. If the oil change is very overdue (10000 miles overdue) then that can cause emissions problems and the check engine light.

SOURCE: Oil Light stays on.

it sounds like a faulty sending unit the only way to know for sure is to install a mechanical gauge and measure pressure. or just replace the sender. it is not wise to drive it and just assume it is nothing major. if it is a mechanical problem will cost a lot more if you lock the engine up

SOURCE: oil was changed and check engine light was not reset

This is really easy! Please follow these directions:

Turn the key ON

Look at the odometer, and verify that it displays "ODO" and the total mileage traveled. If it is on "Trip A" or "Trip B", press the black stick next to the odometer to read "ODO", and the total miles traveled.

Turn the key OFF.

Press in, and HOLD the black trip meter reset button, hold it in.
DO not release it.

Turn the key ON; do NOT start the engine

Observe the Odometer display. The total mileage traveled will disappear, and you will see 5 dashes, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1 dash, and finally, 5 zeros. Then, the total mileage traveled will redisplay.

Release the black trip meter reset stick.

This completes the reset procedure, and the light will be back on in 5,000 miles, to remind you of you next oil change.

Hope this helps, and thanks for choosing FixYa. Happy Thnkasgiving!

SOURCE: oil pressure light

Oils in long over due service forms **** which can't be circulated properly under normal oil pump pressure causing Crank shaft or cam shaft bearing recieve the lubricant quite late. The said bearings could be damaged.

For the light, the oil pressure switch could have accummulated some **** which is making it malfunction.

SOURCE: I waited a little too long to get the oil changed

It will have to be cleared with a code reader, but the code needs to be read to see why,it is on,there is another reason for it to come on,not the past due oil change,If this was at all helpful, please rate, thank you.

Oil light flashing

It likely means that you are low on oil and it is long overdue for an oil change. If you don't, you will be changing your engine.

Engine light on

No the service engine or check engine light means there is a problem with the performance of the engine or the emissions components.
You would need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed. Most auto parts stores can do it for free in hopes of selling you some parts.
You can look the codes up online.

2005 grand Prix oil pressure light an dinging comes on

1. Check your oil level. If oil level is not ok, correct oil level and find out why oil level was low and correct the problem. (Leaks, bad PCV, Burning oil due to severe engine wear, nobody has bothered to check it for the last 3000 miles, WAY overdue for an oil change, etc.) If oil level is ok, proceed to next step.

2. Remove the oil pressure sensor and install a manual oil pressure gauge. Run engine to verify low oil pressure. If gauge shows that the oil pressure is low, overhaul or replace engine. If oil pressure is ok, replace oil pressure sending unit and retest.

Why is the oil light on ?

Hello....When ever the oil light comes on and stays on..this is an indication of a low oil pressure reading...I would start with checking your oil level in your engine..or have service personnel check it...It could also be caused by viscosity breakdown of the oil...which can result in lowered oil pressure especially if it is way overdue for an oil change...and on very rare intsances...a faulty oil pressure sender or oil pump could be the trouble...But I would start with the oil level....and go down the list...I hope this was helpful.....PEACE!!!!!

When I took the car for an oil chane after I purchased it the tech showed me the filter, it was COVERED in black sludge. Which explained the oil light flickering on and off and the check engine light the...

I see this all the time! That's what happens when the oil is not changed regularly. If your oil light is still coming on, it is because there is severe damage to the engine bearings, connecting rods, valve lifters, cylinder walls and probably the crankshaft and camshaft. That is pretty much the WHOLE engine. Your only choices are:
> Replace it with a new/remanufactured engine (this choice will come with the best warranty, but you'll pay for it).
> Replace it with a used engine (cross your fingers and pray you get a good one - hopefully, one that has been properly maintained and isn't nearly as bad as the one you are replacing).
> Remove your engine, overhaul it, and put it back in (very time-consuming and usually has very little warranty).
> Sell the car "AS-IS" or trade it in on a new car. (you probably won't get much unless you sell the car NOW while the engine still runs).

I have customers that continually go WAY overdue for their oil changes. They use excuses like "I didn't have the time" or "I just couldn't afford to get the oil changed". I try to warn them of the possibilities. I tell them that they cannot afford to NOT change the oil, but they just ignore my efforts and come back way overdue the next time. I should refer them to you!

If I need a oil change will my car crank?

That all depends on how far overdue your car is for an oil change! If it is so badly overdue for an oil change that the engine has seized-up, it won't crank. If it is just due (or overdue) for an oil change and no engine damage has occurred yet, it will not have any effect on whether the engine cranks.

Could oil light come on if you are way overdue on oil change?

Yes - most cars will consume oil during normal operation. If you're way overdue your car may have consumed enough that it's tripping the low-oil light. At least check the level and top it off, but you really need to change it.

Oil light comes on and dings all day

If engine is not ticking or knocking while running, likely the pressure sender is faulty. If changing it makes no difference, have actual pressure checked with a mechanical gauge.

Oil light comes on

this is an oil pressure light, most likely the sending unit for the gauge is defective, but I do recommened a shop hook up a oil press test gauge and verify u do't really have low oil pressure, then if that tests ok replace the sending unit on the engine.
