No doubt your soft top issue has long been resolved but just in case someone has a similar issue:
I started to open my A4 Soft top externally using the door key method and like an idiot I must have disengaged the key before the soft top was fully down. I was unable to activate the opening or closing of the soft top automatically using either the key or soft top switch inside. I then manually closed the soft top using the users handbook and manual tool supplied. Soft top would still Not open automatically and the soft top alarm would activate. I solved the issue by manually opening the soft top fully and then manually closing the soft top fully. This seemed to have reset whatever had gone askew.

An update to my manual opening & closing comment - you may find you cannot manually close the roof as it seems to be locked in the open position and try as you might, you cannot lift the roof. Don't panic, leave it for 10 mins and you will find the roof rests and free to lift.

Hi can't open boot due to roof not working and cannot close the roof at the back catch because u need to turn Allen key bolt to lock it manually which is in the boot can u help please

Hello, One thing is, you never mentioned was when the top stopped working in the first place (i.e. did the car battery die, the nit stopped working, out of the blue, etc.. etc..).
That information could be very helpful in diagnosing the problem.

You may already know this, but someone else reading this info may not, so hopefully it's useful to someone.

The windows need to be working properly and be normalized for the top to function. If you have a specific window that is not working, fix that window first.

Do this to "normalize" the windows:
Press power window switch and roll the window up/down (depending upon where it is when you start) until the window is either completely closed/open and when it reaches the fully opened or closed position keep holding the button for an additional 2-4 seconds. Repeat procedure in both directions up/down for each window. After this point the auto up/down features should be working.

If they won't go up at all after power loss, try this:
If windows won't go up after loss of electrical power. Make certain trunk and all doors are closed. Stand outside by driver's window. Use the key remote to lock car. All windows should go up.

If this doesn't get your top to move, I would hold/press the rollbar button up for 20 to 30 seconds and then down for 20 to 30 seconds. Once the rollbar is put back down, the top should start working again.

If it still doesn't work, I would get some WD-40 or some equivalent penetrating oil and oil where the rear key goes in on the boot/trunk lid and try it again. Sometimes these get stuck and the WD-40 will get them moving again.

Hope this helps and if it doesn't please post back what happens, so I can try to help.

Thanks,
TJ

BMW X 3 Panoramic sun roof initialization.

title says X5, but description says X3. i'll explain for an X5, but X3 with the pano should be the same. and i'll explain function of the roof, not reprogramming.

button is located on the panel at the top near the front & center windshield. its the switch on the far left on this panel. its a switch that not only toggles, but also slides forward & back.

with your finger in front of the button, slide it back & release. this will make the cover slide back and store revealing the sun roof. you know have 2 options (tilt the sunroof up or open the roof completely).

to tilt it up, press up on the rear of the button and release. the rear of both roofs will pop up. to close, push up and release the front of the button or slide the switch forward.

to slide it open completely, repeat what you did to open the protective cover (slide the switch from front to back). the roof will open completely and stow out of the way. to close, slide the switch forward and release. pano roof will now close.

to close the cover, slide the switch forward again.

neat trick: if you want to tilt the sunroof open without opening the protective cover, press up on the rear of the button (when the cover is closed) and release. the cover will separate in the middle exposing about a 2-3 inch mesh, then tilts the sunroof open. to close, push the button forward again.

also, if you are above a certain speed (can't remember what it is off hand) with the sunroof open or tilted, it will close automatically, then perform the neat trick on its own to keep air coming in.

one last trick: if you want to open the windows and sunroof from outside, press & hold the unlock button (forward button on the key) and you will see the windows go down, then the roof will open to vent. releasing the button will stop the motion of the windows & roof.

hope this answered what you were asking.

Trunk and hood manual latch won't work

That is not the problem the problem is your convertable roof is not closing properly to test this let someone press down on the roof lid and then try to open the trunk, To fix this let the roof lid open and let the roof come up until the back part stands up to let the roof lid close so that the roof hold is exposed look on the right hand side of the car (if your standing at the back) under the roof lid catch there is a small plastic buttun that the roof lid catch needs to pres down on, this tells the car that the roof lid is seucre and it is now safe to let open the trunk, All you have to do is set the tension on the cable for that roof lid catch and the problem is sorted.

Top wont let back or close

Inside your trunk on the left hand side there are two electric motors one drives the rooof lid and the other drives the roof, they can be engaged and disengaged independantly by small steel levers(THESE ARE LOCATED UNDER THE MATERIAL). once disengaged check if they work by standing and checking them while someone presses the roof button for you.

If they work and everything is fine you need to engage and disengage until they are in sync, When the roof lid is open you will also notice a small button under the roof lid catches this button allows the back part of the roof to drop and to tell the car that the roof lid is closed and it is now safe to let opne the trunk.

Convertable roof and trunk won't open

The Roof Mechanism works with two motors similiar to the ones that wund the windows. Now the two mechanism are located in the left side of the trunk.

The trunk wont open Because of the roof lid that is not closed properly. How you can test this is to press down on the right sid of the roof lid and then try to opne the trunk.

Now the reason that this is happening is that the roof lid is not closing properly nad pressing on a small orange buttin located just below the right hand side roof lid catch. How you are going to remedy this problem is to adjust the cable tension to close more securely.

Now the two motors in the trunk that works the convertable roof can be engaged and disengaged on motor works the roof lid and the other one the roof.

You need to get these motors in sync so that they open and close the roof in the correct order.

That is if the electric are still working.

1997 BMW 328i convertible

The problem is that your roof(SOFT TOP) lid isnt closing properly. If you open the roof lid you see there is a button on one of the latches that tells the car that the roof is securely closed if your roof lid is not secure the trunk wont open. To test this press down on the roof lid and the try to open the trunk.

Soft top 97' problem

Open the trunk. Remove the material covering on the left hand side. You will see 2 electric motors(similiar to the ones that wind the windows). One motor open and closes the roof lid the other brings the roof up or down.

These motors can be engaged and disengaged manually.

First check that the motor's are working.

If the motors are working.

Then engage and disengage until they are in sync and open and closes the roof in the correct order.
