Hi, it does sound like your on the right track as the noise gets louder when you turn the wheel. without turning the wheel you should have a slight noise that will get louder when you turn the wheel this would then point me to believ the power steering pump needs replacing.

As your not loosing any fluid then the rest of the steering should be ok so changing the pump will solve your problem, just remember to make sure you bleed the pump properly and the steering properly after fitting the new one as not doing this properly could cause damage to seals inside the rack itself causing more problems than you need so double check you have bled all the air out ok.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

My ford focus has started humming in front end

this sounds like a hub bearing, to determine which one it is when your driving and you here the noise turn the steering wheel slightly left and then slightly right, the noise should get louder or lighter. If louder on right turn then it would be left bearing is bad because your putting more weight on the left side

The car is a manual tranny car, your synchromesh gear is not engaging properly, take to a tranny shop to check it as a bearing may be out in 3rd gear.

52 grinding noise from under car . not sure if it

Hi, When a grinding noise is detected first locate the area of the car it is being generated from. Most grinding noises will be being generated while driving, if you are having a hard time detecting the location of the grinding sound, have a helper ride along in the rear seat to give a new perspective on the origin of the grinding noise. A grinding noise can be generated by many things from worn out brake pads to axle bearing failure. Once a grinding sound has been detected action must be prompt. Grinding in most cases is telling you something has failed or is failing. It can be as a result of worn out brake pads or shoes, check your engine and transmission mount, check for axle bearing failure, check your power steering system for leak...

My steerin has started to lock up,ive open bonnet and there is very little fluid in it.i have a ford focus saloon 01 1.6 petrol, what kind of fluid do i need

What you need is Power Steering Fluid. You should be able to buy it in any autoparts store or maybe service stations, depending on where you live...you are talking about the power steering pump is very low, right? Are you hearing a grinding noise when you turn the wheels?

1998 for windstar gl..grinding noise in steering

i don't think it is the pump. The pump would generally make a noise all the time because the motor's belt is what powers your power steering pump. Sometimes you will hear it bog down the motor when it is being turned all the way to one side or the other but that sould be about it. The grinding you described sounds like a rack and pinion problem and not anything to do with the pump itself. I hope im wrong because rack and pinion fixes are much more expensive and time comsuming to repair

1998 ford taurus problem

Your Power Steering pump is were the noise comes from, the system fluid must be flushed until it's clean and the PS Pump replaced, around $300 to fix.
