It goes away once the car is on temp. I can hardly hear it, but she is adamant. can I lube the belt to hear if it is the belt or perhaps a pulley?
It's usually because your belt, and sometimes the pulley too, become glazed from oil or some other liquid getting spilled on them then it heats up, and becomes hard, like a polish.
This makes the belt squeal. Until the heat of the belt & pulley heat up again when you run your car. Then when you shut off your vehicle again, and the belt & pulley cool down, it will squeal it will squeal again when you start it.
You could use belt dressing, which will soften the rubber to stop the squeal.
I use Engine degreaser. Take the serpentine belt off, spray the ribbed and smooth belt pulleys. Use a toothbrush or soft wire brush to clean the pulleys. The rinse the pulleys with water. Then put your belt back on.
You may find that the sound stays though.
Then it's time to check you belt tensioner & pulleys. Bad bearings or tesioner in your pulleys can cause the Squealing.
Replacing a Tensioner or pulley is very simple. And the videos are all over the internet.
Testimonial: "To Mark and the two other gents that sent me recommendations, thank you kindly for the effort and advice, I will definitely try them. You gents are making this place just a little better to live in. every little bit helps. Thank you once again."
Hi try this on the belt..cheers
Idler pulley or tensioner pully.

Check the vacuum hoses, but sounds like the IAC or even the o2 sensors. The computer will pick up on the o2 sensors but not the IAC..Go to your local ADVANCE store and they will check on computer for free :)
SOURCE: noisy water pump pulley, alternator pulley..timing belt tensioner
I have a 1995 xj6....same problem. I replaced the belts, water pump, and the alternator. Still does it. As I play with the tension on the belt (belt that drives water pump, alternator) it goes away and comes back. If I remove the belt, the metal to metal screech stops. I then, with just the belt, turned the main pulley on the front of the engine, and there was the sound! The main pulley has 2 belts that run on it. Also, 2 pulley tracks. They SHOULD move simultaneously and be super meshed. But the rear one moves on its own under tension until it warms up and I guess, the bushing maybe expands. Now.....how do I fix it??????

The problem is the rear motor mount is filled with hydraulic fluid that leaks onto the accessory drive belt. The motor mounts fail prematurely and the fluid makes the belt squeak. Toyota dealership I took my 2006 Corolla to replaced the motor mount and belt free of charge.

It is probably the tensioner pulley that's gone bad. It can be replaced separately, if you can purchase the pulley separately. As to how to go about changing it in such a small space, it's definitely possible, with the right type of tools. That's why mechanics have so many different shapes and lengths of the same size tools.
