It will start but almost immediately sputters and dies. Can not keep it running. Gas pedal is hard to push down when trying to rev the engine a bit in park.

Husband said the spark plugs look dirty. There is around 50k miles on it. Desperetly need answers quick as husband is stuck at work and will have to walk home. The engine light has not come on. No codes pop up. Nothing weird or different recently.

Sounds like it's time to replace fuel filter, or possibly a bad fuel pump. I'm uncertain why the gas pedal would be hard to push as it most likely isn't a cabled type on that new of a vehicle, but you can check by looking at the top of the pedal itself to see if there is a cable and if it's possibly frayed.

2000 chevy silverado 1500 5.3 v8 engine starts then will shut down when you push gas pedal or will only run for a mintue then stalls out and then is hard to start again

You may be losing fuel pressure or have a hard fault in the electronics of the engine control system. Do this, have the fuel pressure checked and have a fault code test run on the computer system. If all is ok then the ignition starter switch is suspect as well and the MAF sensor which will not set a fault when it fails.

Sputters and dies on cold start, significant drop in gas mileage.

You need to rebuild the carburetor or clean the choke linkage and make sure the choke valve closes cold.

Sputtered out and now it won't stay running; dies when put in gear.

Mass air flow , crank sensor . I wouldn't discount anything . Having a scan tool that can view engine sensor data would be a great help too , testing fuel pressure and flow and back pressure test the exhaust .

My ford contour 2.0L Fi Automatic- can't go more

The vehicle has a rev limiter. Will it rev over 3500 when you drive it? If no, then I would guess that the exhaust might be partially restricted. But the engine computer won't allow you to free rev the engine that high in park and neutral.
