This vehicle has a double overhead cam engine. The water pump is driven off the timing chain. Unless you have had experience doing internal engine repairs, this is not a DIYer job. There is great risk of doing more damage than good if any step(s) of the repair procedure are not done correctly.

I would recommend a shop manual or maybe a DIY book. There are important steps involving the hydraulic belt tensioner.

I suggest getting the Haynes service manual for this vehicle. The number of steps needed to do this job are too numerous to list in the space available. If your engine is the 2.4L four cylindar, it is the same procedure used to change the timing belt. If you are going into the water pump on this engine, you may as well change the belt and tensioner pulley. If you do not have a well equipped garage, I would not attempt this job.

If you have the 5sfe 2.2 L engine, the water pump is in-line with the camshaft timing belt and is under a two piece plastic cover behind your alternator/powersteering/crankshaft pulley belts. Rule of thumb is to always change timing belt with the water pump. It's so much work to get to it, you might as well do both at the same time. You'll avoid having to go through all that twice if the belt slips or breaks later. Need advice on what to do exactly step by step? ask me directly. I'll tell you if I know.

You need to keep the belt diagram handy so you can replace it once you've finished with the water pump. Here are the belt diagrams for both engine sizes in 2002...

drain coolant loosen water pump pulley bolts, take off serpentine belt, finish removing pulley, unbolt water pump (5 bolts) and remove scrap off old gasket silicone new gasket to new water pump and reverse steps for installation

Water Pump Replacement (4.3L)
Removal Procedure
Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
Remove the cooling fan and clutch assembly.

Tools Required
J 46406 Fan Clutch Wrench

Removal Procedure
Remove the upper fan shroud.
Remove the fan clutch from the water pump in a counterclockwise direction using the J 46406 .
Remove the fan clutch assembly.
Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Remove the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
Remove the water pump pulley.
Remove the radiator outlet hose clamp from the water pump.
Remove radiator outlet hose from the water pump.
Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
Remove the water pump from the engine.
Remove the water pump gaskets.
Clean the water pump gasket mating surfaces.
Installation Procedure
Install the water pump gaskets.
Install the water pump to the engine.
Apply a sealer (GM P/N 12346004) to the bolt threads.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the water pump mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the mounting bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).
Install the radiator outlet hose to the water pump.
Install the water pump pulley.
Install the water pump pulley bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.3L.
Install the fan clutch assembly.
Fill the radiator cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
