SOURCE: shifter knob removal

the shift knob is glued and pressed on, the best way to remove it intact is to heat the knob with a heat gun and pull straight up with a lot of force, please be very careful because when the knob finally releases there is very good chance that you can hit yourself in the face, if the knob is not to be used again you cut a **** up the side with a dremal tool,

I did mine too and used the manual adjustable one as it should technically not wear as quickly as auto adjusting. No issues, no difference in *feel*

Usually there is a nut on the bottom of a shift knob that needs to be loosened, then the knob just screws off. Use a wrench, if it's hexagonal, if it's just round or there is no nut it may just screw off. It will be really tight though, be prepared to have to really crank on it to get it loose. The new one should just thread back on. You may need to install a nut on the bottom to adjust the rotation of any pattern or gear shift diagram on the new one.

There is a set screw under the crome ring at the bottom of the shifter knob. use a small flat screw driver and pry down on the chrome ring and it should come down and the set screw is under the chrome ring

I am trying to install an aftermarket shifter knob on my 1996 Saab 900 se can I do that? And how do I do that thank you.

measure the shifter were the knob fastens to then call around or go around to different shops(auto parts, speed shops) to see if they can help you. it doesn`t have to be a Saab part.

My 96 saab 900 2.3 manual transmission starting misfiring really badly yesterday, but I can't locate the spark plugs - any help

When you raise your hood find the distributor follow the wires. should lead you to a cover with 4 or 6 screw will need a star screw driver to remove under that cover are your spark plugs.

My saab 900 se t. 96 wont go into reverse and the shifter is very sloppy

I am not a mechanic, although I have worked on cars in the past' I think by your description, the problem lies in you linkage between the shifter and transmission.

The fan does not turn on when I turn on the a/c or heater in my 1996 saab 900 se

It's most likely the blower motor resistor or relay. My money is on the resistor. It's a pretty common issue on all makes and models of vehicles. I'm not sure where yours is located. Domestic cars and trucks have them on the top of the blower motor housing which is behind the glove box on the passenger side. A few torx bit screws remove the box liner, and a socket removes the couple of nuts holding the resistor on. Other than that, it's just a pigtail wire harness that plugs into it. Pretty easy job. The resistor for your vehicle (96 Saab 900 SE) is $53.99 locally here in Minnesota.

Cannot see selector gear at nite - lights are out

Remove the console that surrounds the shifter. This may require removing the shifter handle, too, but it may not be necessary. There will be a screw on the back of the shifter's handle. If it is necessary to remove the handle, make sure the parking brake is engaged and shift into the lowest position to allow for more room to move the handle and then the console. Under the console, you will see the lamp for your shifter. Take it to the parts store to find the appropriate replacement.

i hope this helps

I have a Saab 2006 9 3. The shift knob falls off.

I own a 2006 9-3 Aero convertible and decided to replace the automatic shifter trim/boot. It's the part that shows the gear selections (P, R, N, D, & M). It required that I remove the shifter knob. First, slightly twist/turn and pull (perhaps wiggle is more accurate) down the shifter collar just below the knob. One to 1.5 inches should work. The ring inside the collar is what secures/tightens the clips of the shift knob against the shifter mechanism. Pull straight up on the knob. Done!

Need diagram for floor shifter assembly

Hi Laura: the best source of info on this car is the "Bentley Bible" aka the Saab 900 Official Service Manual, costs about $40 from Amazon!

16 valve manual: http://www.amazon.com/Saab-900-Valve-Service-Manual/dp/0837603137

8 valve manual :http://www.amazon.com/Eight-Official-Service-Manual-1981-1988/dp/0837603102
get the appropriate manual for your car and enjoy the Saab!

Has info on just about every thing, including shifter. You didn't say whether yours is manual or auto. You could source a used shifter from your local Saab specialist or local junk yard, though there aren't too many Saabs at the wreckers; a good sign!

Replacing ignition switch on Saab 1996 900s 2.3 I 5 speed

You take all the center console and plastic ducts from between the seats. There are 4 10mm bolts holding the shifter mechanism to the floor. Take these off and do your best to flip the whole housing to where you can access the bottom side. The ignition switch is attached under there. As I recall there are 2 T20 screws holding it on.
