Temp gauge does not register when hot

Car has 2 fans ,passenger side just replaced. replaced ac pump w/ pulley. 1999 ford taurus fans do not come on is this because temp gauge does not register

Have you tried replacing the temperature sending unit? I think it's close to the air filter assembly. It has two wires going to it and two posts that are threaded into a smaller box. Hope this helps.

To find out about the CTS (the sensor the above clarification request is referring to), try disconnecting the wiring harness. It's right behind the thermostat housing and upper radiator hose. If your fans kick on while the engine is running, it's probably an issue with your PCM (computer).

I've been having a similar problem with my 1999 Taurus (OHV). Try checking the wiring harness for voltage. You should have five volts on one side (connect the negative terminal of your voltmeter to a good ground and test the terminals with the positive lead). The gray/red wire should have five volts, the light green/red wire should carry nearly nothing. You can also check the terminals on the sensor itself with an Ohm-meter. It should be around 14.000 ohms when cold, then the resistance (ohms) should go down as the engine warms. Hope this helps you to whittle down where the issue is.

2004 Ford Taurus got AC Clutch replaced and now a check engine light came on. Car seems to heat up ever since replaced AC. What could be the problem?

check to see if the radiator and A/C condenser are clear of airflow obstructions (damage, excessive leaves and dirt, etc). Check to make sure that the electric fans are running. There are 2 speeds. As it warms up, it should go slow, then when it gets hot, the fans should go to high speed. Check also to see if radiator is blocked up. It should be at engine temp on one side, and it should be cooler, but still warm, on the other side. Neglected coolant causing rust and debris blockages in the radiator are common to these cars. If the coolant is rusty and orange/brown, it may also indicate a failing water pump

2001 Ford Taurus running hot

First thing to check when the engine is cold is that if there is enough antifreeze in the radiator and after you run the engine for about 5/10 minuter check both the rad hoses to see if they are both at the same temperature, if the return hose which is the bottom one is cold then replace the thermostat. If both hoses are hot or same temp then make sure the radiator fan comes on?

When you open the hood ,,look on the passenger side, and you will see the drive belt..It goes around different pulleys ,,and its one belt..To one side you will see the powersteering pump..It should have a cap on it that says powersteering on it..Its kinda of complicated job to change the pump,,without the tools..

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus SE ... I changed the water pump about a year ago because the mechanic said it was bad . My car starts to run hot when it is idle . As long as I am driving it stays half way. I...

Certainly sounds like a fan problem. I would check all your fuses, relays. Possible ECT (electronic coolant temp sensor) or even fan motor itself. Hope this helps,TJ

I just replaced thermostat and veh still running hot? Why?

hello tbrink. most likely your water pump is not running like it should resulting in it running hot. To test it do this: Get your car up to operating temperature, run the A/C. Once the temp is about 80-85 deg. Park it and let it sit idling with the A/c on for about 5 minutes, then turn the car off. let the car sit for about 5 minutes with the engine off. Then turn the ignition so that the temp gauge registers. You will probably see it spike to over 100 because the car has been sitting with a hot engine and no coolant flowing through to take away the heat. Note the temp, then start the engine. If the temp doesn't come down to normal within about a minute, then you probably have a bad pump. When functioning properly, as soon as the car is cranked the pump will move enough coolant through the head to drop the temp very quickly.

The car is overheating when coming to stop, if I put the car in neutral while I am in the stopped mode the temperature will drop somewhat. The fans are working okay. Which is the pulley to release...

The pulley that releases tension is on the passenger side and has a 1/2" square breaker bar hole to put a 1/2" breaker bar (2 feet long) into that you can get from Sears or an auto parts store that sells tools.

I would check the fluid level in the overflow tank to make sure there is enough coolant in the system.

Then, I would consider having it flushed and filled with new coolant.

I would check for slow leaks out of the water pump area on the passenger's side. There is an oil and coolant cover gasket on the side of the engine that sometimes leaks in the vicinity of the water pump.

We have a 1998 Ford Taurus that had this problem, and it took a few hundred dollars to fix the leak.
