Oil runs out of the car when not running

I recently had my car looked at and they told me the seal on the oilpan is leaking and needs replaced. I have been keeping oil in the car and keeping an eye on it until I can raise the money to pay for the repairs. I wen out last night and added a quart of oil and it never showed up on the dipstick. I looked under the car and all of the oil I put in ran straight out of the engine and onto the ground. How is this possible for oil to run out when the engine is cold and not running?

Are you sure the oil plug is screwed all the way in. Sometimes they come loose and fall out. If that is ok see if the bolts that holds the oil pan on are all tight or the gasket cracked.
You should be able to tell if you look under the car and see where it is leaking.

If the oil pan gasket is split open it will run out of the gap in the gasket.

SOURCE: how to change / repair crankshaft oil seal on focus deisel

hi, there is no easy fix here. you will have to break down the engine to repair this. you could use a 30w oil to slow down the leak but, the repair is inevitable.

please rate and god bless.

How to replace rear crankshaft seal on a 1997 Ford Escort 1.4I (do I need any special tools?)

Yes and if you don't have them and your not really versed on this you should not attempt this at all you will be stuck with a car on jack stands wherever it is are you sure that the seal is leaking ? If not try this jack up the car if the whole area is covered in oil use brake parts cleaner and a brush or engine degreaser and get the area clean and dry now take baby powder or flower and dust the area now start the car and watch for the leak the clean and dusted area will now show oil running down the areas tobe cleaned are the engine above the oil pan and the oilpan itself you must understand that there could be oil blow back from the wind when driving and now oil will be everywhere and it could be just the pan gasket that's the problem it's worthwhile to check the difference in $$$$ for the repair is $35.00 to do it yourself to $350.00+for a mechanic good luck oh I almost forgotalso check the valve covers for leaking the same way a leaking cover will cause oil to run down the back of the motor and cause a false alarm for the seal so be very thorough in your inspection with the cleaning and powdering of the areas you might get good news and save some $$$$ that could be spent on a meatball hero and a beer THAT'S a sandwich on the east coast STEPHEN

Is there a certain type of gasket or something else when there is a oil leak starting in a 1998 pontiac firefly

clean around the oil pan gasket area well as some oil leaks are actually rocker cover gasket and filter leaks that run down the block and appear as pan leaks.. Check front crankshaft seal as the oil from there also appears as a pan leak

Ford torus 2006 leaking oil can't go a mile without going through 4 quarts of oil ???????

When it is this bad you have to park it and look underneath the motor. It should show where it is leaking from all of the oil trail. A part called an oil pressure sender may be leaking. It is very simple to replace and inexpensive. It also will not hurt to replace your oil filter and hand tighten it. Make sure you have a clean surface when the old filter is removed.

By the time you remove your oil filter, you should have a good visual check of the oilpan and oilplug. The oilplug can be stripped if someone crossthreaded or overtightened the nut. There are oversized oilplugs and repair adapters available to work around the problem.

In the event you have a hole in the oilpan, with a good cleaning, a product called JB weld can permanently patch a hole. Your motor has 2 main openings where the crankshaft is attached. Each end has a seal and you have major disassembly to replace inexpensive seals. The upper portion of the engine has valve covers and they are easily replaced.

Do 1 thing at a time and go by the evidence. With luck this may be a simple thing to fix. I hope my solution has been helpful to you.

Oilpan replacement

I will try to save you money. If the pan is leaking around the gasket you many be able to tighten it enough to reseal it. There are some products that can seal spot leaks like "Seal-All". It is like a model airplane glue that resists gas and oil.

For rusted pans you can use "JB Weld" This hardens and strengthens what you put it on. You mix it like bondo and it dries quickly. Your pan does not have much pressure in it except from blowby from the pistons.

Unfortunately I have not had to replace a pan on this series of car. Sometimes you need to lift an engine off its mounts and turn the crank to clear the lobes, the oil sump may clear. A quick look at a Chiltons will confirm this repair. Wanted to give you alternatives to pulling the pan so I answered your repair problem. Good Luck on this.
