When I first start escape when its cold outside, idles rough, rpm goes past 1000 like it should but drops within seconds to like 500 to 600 rpm's. After ten minutes, runs fine. Bought new EGR Valve and cleaned IAC (idle air control) the best I can. Started it after I cleaned IAC, and the idle was about 1300 rpm's (when cold) and about 800 rpm's (when warm). And I felt more power when driving. But the next day the idle was down again and rough but the power is still there. Help me out please.

To update my earlier repair on the 2001 6 cyl Escape: When cold, and when the ignition was turned over but no accelerator pressure given, the rough idle finally returned the P0303 code again when the check engine light came on indicating that it wasn't caused by the plugs or the coil. FYI, I had replaced the intake manifold gaskets during the original repair and just prior to that I had replaced the fuel filter which was very dirty (I cut it open to see).
The repair manual referred to fuel injectors as a possible problem. I have run three tanks of fuel using different injector cleaning products and am very pleased with the results. Cold starts are much smoother and I am unable to coax out the P0303 code or any other code.
My opinion, change the fuel filter, use a fuel injector cleaner for a couple of tanks, change the plugs if the problem still exists. The coils were not the problem on my vehicle.
I had a similar problem about 2 years ago on my 2001. Had the plugs replaced. (no coils). But the problem persisted, rough idle, even dying when cold, but it ran fine when warm. I also had the P0303 come on. Wound up having the intake gasket(s?) replaced and the problem went away completely.
Check your ignition coils. If one of your coils is cracked, it will not spark correctly. I have had this problem and replace them as they break. They are about $56.00 each and there are 6 on the 3.0. You can change them out 1 by 1

My 2001 Ford Escape was idling rough and the check engine light came on. The OBD2 code was P0303 which is a misfire on cylinder 3. The diagnosis was to replace all the plugs and replace #3 coil. #3 is in the back on the right under the intake manifold; a major diy job. Because the coil was expensive I decided to change the plugs and while I was in there I decided to move the coil that was on #3. I moved it to one of the front cylinders so I could replace it later without removing the intake manifold which is what makes changing the back plugs such a big job. After putting it back together it runs better but is still rough when cold. I haven't had the "check engine" light yet since the new plugs but if I get a misfire code on the cylinder that I moved the coil to I will change the coil and see it that smooths out the cold idle.
2001 ford escape When its cold outside my rpms just bounce and it will die sometimes unless I keep my foot on the gas till its warmed up . Even after its warm it just shakes back and forth at redlights till I drive it for a good 20 min.
Ive had all new plugs and boots installed and break booster replaced no help.
my 2005 equinox will not run on a cold day. it is hard to start as well. it will run, erratically for approx a minute. with a rough idle. then the second engine light with the arrow comes on and the vehicle shuts down. the exhaust smell while its running is also very strong.
