I had the same problem with my Olympus VN-5000. I found a solution, which appears to reformat the memory. Try to press the STOP and DISP/MENU buttons at the same time for about 2 seconds, and then the display should show "FOR". It will supposedly erase the whole memory, but will at least make the device usable again. I hope this solution works for your model!

I have never personal tried this, but with your Mic-D plugged in, go to this website and download the program. it is supposed to search your system to find any device connect to it that does not have a driver for it, and install it for you. I had a similar sounding problem my Olympus VN-5000. I would turn it on, it would show "CHK" for a few seconds, and then "ERR." This persisted despite fresh batteries. The "ERR" message reportedly means a memory error. I found a solution, which appears to reformat the memory. Strangely my C-765 has changed and takes picture on P and download to PC on green arrow before did both on green arrow,maybe others are having the same experience?

Take it in to an Olympus service centre and have it repaired and serviced.

This memory card is known as an 'SM' type of card. Sadly this format is now obsolete and is not in general use like the now common 'SD' type. If you hunt around you can find a general purpose multicard reader that will take various different types of memory card. These are usually cheap to buy and more useful as it can read more than one card type. Something like the link below should do the job. That really sound like bad batteries. You could try the new Lithium batteries, however this camera takes a proprietary battery, a CR-V3 - 1,400mAh, 3 volt battery and it is Lithium Ion. I think you are going to have to run the pertinent software in compatibility mode, probably for XP or Windows 7. You could try running the XP driver on an XP machine if you have one collecting dust. That is, if the driver exists in the links at the old posts below. This recorder has been around from at least 2009. Alternatively, you can try the Olympus chat to inquire if a current driver might work on it. I'm under the impression that installation of any driver for the device is a little tricky at the best of times.
