You won't loose your data Why wold you think you would? once data is written to a hard drive it remains there until it is removed be a user, it works on the same principlea a floppy, the magnetic coating on the surface of the anodized disks inside of the HD are written to and retain memory of the data, the only things in a computer that won't keep their data are the RAM chips which need electricity running through them to work.

I'm trying to get information off my harddrive
Ignore the format drive pop up and open the "my computer" icon and see if the drive is listed in the devices shown there. If it is click on that drive and the files and folders will appear like any other. If it doesn't appear right off, reboot, but leave the drive attached vis USB and see if the computer will recognise it and list it.
A new hard disk drive, Hitachi part
Hello there
DLBurkhart.
Here's your geek-steer ...
"...is emitting strange whining sounds every now and then ... Is this strange noise a sign of an impending problem?" == EVERY strange HDD noise is ALWAYS a sign of impending failure.
Peform a "Check Disk" on it ...
chkdsk DRIVE_LETTER /X /R
- There should be NO surface errors if it's new(er).
- Regardless, if it's new, then immediately insist upon a replacement.
Good luck, and please do post back ...
- to let me (and interested others) know how things worked out,
- to provide clarification or feedback,
- if you have ANY further questions.
Today's the best day of my life ... and NOW you're part of it!

Cloned hard drive
there are few thing you ahve to keep in mind
there are two type of hard disk
1. IDE
2. SATA
As per your hdd capacity it should of IDE type.
Now there are two IDE slots on motherboard. One is Primary and other is Secondary
You can fix two hdd with one IDE Slot that mean you can fix up upto faour IDE hdd at a time
Now again there are Primary master and Primary Slave
and
Secondary Master and Secondary Slave
Now You have to examine what was the location of previous hdd
1 Primary Master
2 Primary Slave
3 Secondary Master
4 Secondary Slave.
Now you have to make a HDD master or Slave.
just in between data cable connector and power cable connector there is a jumper. that specify the master or slave. do reply me if it works well thanks
Hitachi Deskstar 0a33423 chip unit
Hi,
If you have the tools and experience the circuit board can be replaced and assuming that is all that is wrong you may be able to get the data back. The main problem with this is that it can be diffucult to find the right circuit board.
You can try ebay, buy a refurbished drive which may have a universal board for that series on it and cross your fingers. If that works you should be ok, if not you may need the help of a pro. If you need a pro, reply back with your location(Country, State, City) and I will be happy to provide a recommendation.
Hope this helps FixYa,
Chris

Formatted hard drive but will not load linux
Hi,
I am not sure if you have another partition on the drive. If yes insert the xp cd first and delete the drive. Now try installing linux and while the installation point the deleted drive. It would automatically format it as per linux requirements and thus have both xp and linux installed on the same machine.
If you are talking about installing the linux on the same partition as of windows xp then the process would be different. You need to delete the partition using Partition Magic and then go ahead with Linux installation. Linux does not understand Fat32 or NTFS thus will not install on the xp partition without formating.
Thanks for contacting Fixya.
Can't be recognized.
If the noise is like a repetitive ticking or clicking. Well, the sorry to say that the hard drive had crashed... which makes the noise... And sorry to tell you that you cannot do anything but to buy another...
sorry... Fixya!!!
Hard disk is very much SLOW
Click on your Windows start menu. Select Control Panel>Performance and maintenance. Run the Disk cleanup utility. Run the Disk Defragmenter. When all these steps are complete reboot. Your hdd should run faster. Hope this helps & please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.

I added an SATA HD to a system whose C and D
- Right Click [My Computer] and click Manage
- Click Disk Management on the left side
- Inspect the drives listed. The new drive may need to be formatted for the operating system to recognize it and assign it a letter.
- To format the drive, right click the drive with no letter, and click Format. Choose your format (Preferred NTFS), and quick format the drive so that windows recognizes it.
