This would be a bios limitation. Formatting wont' fix the issue. Check your bios and see if it supports "lba" . Certain manufacturers offer "Drive overlay" which will allow you to use the space ..

I have a Hitachi DeskStar T7K250 - hard drive -

This is typically a corrupt mass storage driver in windows. You can try removing C:\windows\driver cache (may be c:\windows\system32\drivercache too.

Then reboot; and see how it works. This resolves most of of the issues. http://techrxgb.com (please join us on facebook for hints / tips and tricks)

SATA INSTALLATION TB HITACHI DESKSTAR

I would recommend you check the website for the latest "bios" (also known as firmware) for the motherboard. Or, see their support to verify you can install a drive this large. Check the Logical Block Addressing (lba) and make sure your bios has it enabled. It is able the read the external harddrive but im

If this is a new drive with nothing on it then just format it. Windows(R) will tell you what to do.

However, a 1TB drive will take ages to format if you haven't sub-divided it by partitioning* (It will take ages anyway but at least you can have a break after each partition).

If the drive already has data on it then it is likely that it is damaged. It is sometimes possible to plug it in to a different IDE or SATA connector which will allow it to be read. Sometimes a different computer can read the data.

Generally speaking, if the operating system says it's not formatted then the only thing to do is to format it.

* I find the best way to set up a drive is with a program called 'Gparted'. It is a Linux based application that runs from it's own bootable CD and partitions drives and formats them at the same time. It is much quicker than Windows(R).

GParted comes as a free, downloadable CD ISO. Google for it and instructions on it's use.

Hope this helps,

CJ

Also make sure that external peripheral like Ext hdd and other usb devices are disconnected. Update once u have tried this.
