The cord is bad.

Generally on the keyboard there is a touch pad on/off hotkey. If you didn't change it, it should be the "Fn" and "F7" in combination.

carbon 14 dated at 12 year old today. acer.com is like mission impossible #5, disavowed... on this PC. sad no? the power jack loved to fail on this poorly designed PC it solders direct (bad) and not Pigtailed as good PC have.. and breaks so with battery out, big one, put pressure on the jack here, side to side see if PC wakes up, if yes, BINGO. bad jack.

There might be a lacquer over the completed circuit Board or it might be left over Flux . Flux is used to ensure solder joint is clean. Some solders have flux in them. Be careful of heat don't apply to much heat to board as it will damage the copper tracks. Are you using Solder wick or a desoldering station or suction solder device to remove the old solder ?

I have yet to see a laptop that plugs directly into the mains - they mostly use an inline power supply to reduce the voltage, usually between 12 volts and about 20 volts and this is the highest voltage the actual computer needs. The screen might need more but that will be generated internally. A particularly sensitive person can feel voltages as low as 20 but most folk need around 40 volts before it can be felt. The power light is an led requiring a voltage of between 0.8 and possibly as much as 2.8. In theory it would be impossible for you to receive an electric shock from your laptop and even if the power supply had become leaky which could make metal components "live", the light and the surrounding material is made of insulating plastic material. If the laptop is running on the battery this possibility is eliminated. You can check for the presence of shock-level voltage there by using a neon mains tested screwdriver or an analogue multimeter with the black probe connected to ground. If no voltage is found to be leaking around the light the answer might be a static discharge...

Replace the battery. When you boot you'll have to set the time and date.

OK, i think you might be installing the wrong driver. You get a 64 bit system, and a 32 bit system. If you have a 32 bit system, you will need to install the 32 bit version driver.

Your VGA connector has a broken solder joint on the video board or the mother board. This isn't an easy fix. Suggest you look for a VGA to USB dongle or adapter instead. Install the driver, and you should be good to go. You'll just have to take your dongle along whenever you need a VGA connection.

Before you go that route, have you tried a hard restart? To do so, you need to disconnect the power cable to the unit, then, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, then, reconnect the power cord, and see if it will then power up. Good luck, because I know the pain of not having an operational computer.
