carbon 14 dated at 12 year old today. (getting long in tooth) NV5207u ( i see gateway dropped support now in this model) The PC is dead even with the battery out , (big'en) if the screen is dead, no text ever, no beeping no flashing LEDs then the PC power park may be dead. buy one, its like 15 bucks dirt cheap, (for sure cheaper than other cures) at ebay... ok?> also next tests, if screen is not dead, does BIOS work? screens? the PC has a fan inside it must blow does it?, heard and felt at the exhaust port? clean it yet? of lint, ? if not PC overheats. this PC has 2 power sources, the battery the AC powerpack it can run on ACpack all by it self for ever. it is not a charger it is AC pack that does 2 things, not just charge. so do so. leave out the old shorted bad battery first. leave it out. and test, so that symptoms can make sense. i take it now response means, DEAD BLACK SCREEN. http://pcdied.com/black-screen.html#Laptop 11 steps to a reason for dead. any 12 year computer is dead now.(best I can tell , manuals rare) why? easy the short lived parts fail first. 1: the big battery is bad and dead shorted, super bad that remove it. 2: the RTC Coin cell, is bad 5-7 year design life, is bad. 3: HDD bad. we test this first, once PC wakes up. 4; bad power pack. acer.com is like mission impossible #5, disavowed... on this PC. sad no? the power jack loved to fail on this poorly designed PC it solders direct (bad) and not Pigtailed as good PC have.. and breaks so with battery out, big one, put pressure on the jack here, side to side see if PC wakes up, if yes, BINGO. bad jack.

bad hdd is top cause a tech ,. test it easy. ask.

you did this wrong. step 1 is run full HDD tests, smart test too. we use linux demo disk, NO OS in the world loads to a bad or weak HDD. never !!! http://www.pcdied.com/linux.html

Generally on the keyboard there is a touch pad on/off hotkey. If you didn't change it, it should be the "Fn" and "F7" in combination.

The cord is bad.

There might be a lacquer over the completed circuit Board or it might be left over Flux . Flux is used to ensure solder joint is clean. Some solders have flux in them. Be careful of heat don't apply to much heat to board as it will damage the copper tracks. Are you using Solder wick or a desoldering station or suction solder device to remove the old solder ?

I have yet to see a laptop that plugs directly into the mains - they mostly use an inline power supply to reduce the voltage, usually between 12 volts and about 20 volts and this is the highest voltage the actual computer needs. The screen might need more but that will be generated internally. A particularly sensitive person can feel voltages as low as 20 but most folk need around 40 volts before it can be felt. The power light is an led requiring a voltage of between 0.8 and possibly as much as 2.8. In theory it would be impossible for you to receive an electric shock from your laptop and even if the power supply had become leaky which could make metal components "live", the light and the surrounding material is made of insulating plastic material. If the laptop is running on the battery this possibility is eliminated. You can check for the presence of shock-level voltage there by using a neon mains tested screwdriver or an analogue multimeter with the black probe connected to ground. If no voltage is found to be leaking around the light the answer might be a static discharge...

Replace the battery. When you boot you'll have to set the time and date.

Your VGA connector has a broken solder joint on the video board or the mother board. This isn't an easy fix. Suggest you look for a VGA to USB dongle or adapter instead. Install the driver, and you should be good to go. You'll just have to take your dongle along whenever you need a VGA connection.

Before you go that route, have you tried a hard restart? To do so, you need to disconnect the power cable to the unit, then, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds, then, reconnect the power cord, and see if it will then power up. Good luck, because I know the pain of not having an operational computer.

hi if that is your default bios image the boot up files are corrupted you have to get the windows disc that matches your windows operating system and load it and select repair follow the prompts and select boot up files or Master Boot record cheers

penguintech October 18, 2012 9:36:23 PM what are you trying to do? if your trying to recover from the partition and it is not allowing you to do so, you may have corrupted the restore partition. or you let the 30 days expire and you have no choice but to reinstall or purchase a legal license. Either way, it may be best to contact gateway for original disks (usually a minimal fee) and once your back up and running, make sure you make a set of recovery disks before you do anything else.

If it is a new hard drive it could need formatting or if it already has software loaded it could need the drive formatting on a different machine. I have noticed something strange, probably in the bios settings of one computer I had contact with recently. It resisted all attempts to load an operating system on an empty drive but loading an operating system with a different machine and then reinstalling the drive in the original it accepted the new operating system without any further hitches. Another thing to think about was the time we tried to take a look at a hard drive and all my friend's machines refused to read it. It turned out his machines had 32 bit operating systems and the fresh hard drive was on 64 bit.
