When I boot up my desktop, it will show the welcome screen then my screen will go black with a large white cursor and nothing else. From there it doesn't not progress, it just remains on that screen until I manually switch the desktop off. Thanks, Andrew

Sorry to hear about your problem. I would be happy to help. I just need a little more information first. What model laptop? What operating system? What were some of the last things you were doing before this happened?

  • tao_andrew Jul 11, 2011

My computer model is a Dell inspiron 560MT, operating system windows 7.
The last thing i was doing was using a program called registry booster 2. It may have been that and i cleared 314 registry errors, then restarted and then i just had the black screen and white cursor.
I've managed to get the system restore and start up repair but that ended in failure.

Try to re install your operating system you can't troubleshoot it if your video card is working a problem like that can be troubleshoot if you can't see any video on the screen you have said that it is working at the start up to the welcome screen so it means there's nothing wrong with your video card and monitor.

Hi andrew,

in that case you need a installation disc of your operating system to repair.

if its vista or windows 7. then you can try start-up repair. by selecting at startup.

to do so. start hitting F8 key as soon as you press the power button.

you will be prompted for advanced boot options.
there you can select startup repair.

you can try system restore as well.

your computer will start working.

Gx620 boots up, then screen goes blank, reboot gives blank screen with cursor blinking. will boot with cd but still shuts down after a minute or two.

Remove the battery and open the case. Look inside the computer with a flashlight to see if any of the capacitors are busted or leaking from corrosion. The capacitors look like little battery towers, but they are not as tall as the AA or AAA batteries.

If the capacitors are bad, your computer goes bunkers.

Black and white lines after bios screen before boot up

The issue appears to be cosmetic if the system boots to WIndows and there are no display issues using the system. Some systems I've seen have a bit of video distortion between the BIOS splash screen and the desktop. A couple things may change that. Update the system BIOS and the video driver to the most current available

Screen Wiggles, CPU Shuts Self Off, Powers Up Very Slowly

Hmm... Any errors on the screen?

Could be a power supply. Fluctuations in that can cause power drops, which would be visible in the video card, and if severe enough, cause the PC to shut off. There are 4 screws and one 1 wire holding those in. It would take about 10 minutes to replace and probably cost you $40-$50 in parts.

To have Geeks do it: Probably $100.
