Monitor goes blank less than a second after turning on.

It's an LCD so the problem is most likely the back-light inverter board. Take a flashlight and shine it directly into the screen from the front. Can you see the image on the screen now? If the image is there but you can't see it without the flashlight than the inverter board needs to be replaced. This is a VERY common problem. Good Luck and let me know what happens, His Dudeness

I start my computer and

Try another monitor as a test. If not the monitor, it might be the graphics card or even the power supply on the computer.

I have a dell inspiron

Does the fault appear on the laptop screen aswell? It appears by your description that the fault is only on the external monitor. If the screen comes on for a moment and then goes blank as described, then this appears to be an invertor fault. It is very common among laptop and tft screens and requires the invertor inside the panel to be replaced / repaired. Simply plug the screen into another computer to confirm.

If one computer monitor is

It does the same thing when attached to another PC?
Common problem in LCD monitors are due to bad capacitors in the power supply, you can Google that.
If you are going to DIY and already try the monitor with another PC, and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on: Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/ Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

After using my home computer

OK you need to change your power settings. This decides what your computer will do when left for a period of time, it may be best to change everything to always on if you cant wake it up from hybernation, check here Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options

LCD VGA Display goes on and off.

Check refresh rate and setting for external display output. It won't work with unsuitable screen resolution, color depth or refresh rate. Check all three points and I believe you can troubleshoot the problem this way.

17" flat screen upper half is dark until "thumped"!

The inverter board that controls the lighting on the screen is dying. since its a 5 year old monitor and only a 17 inch. the cost to repair is greater than the cost of buying a new one. unless you know how to replace the part yourself. I think its best to just buy a new monitor

Screen works as normal then it just goes blank.

rjmd1, Will unit do same when using standard vga input from a PC? You may need to "tear-down" unit to inspect the unit's switch-mode-power-supply and ccfl inverter circuits for bad (frosty looking) solder joint connections where the leads of the electronic components(active and passive) are soldered to the printed circuit boards and check the electrolytic filter capacitors for swollen tops of their aluminum can housings. If unit produced in 2005 might think about trade for new unit. It's not easy task to find "hair line" fractures of "intermittantly open" solder connections without use 10x jewlers loupe" or inspection microscope. Have you turned off or disabled all screen savers or power saving mode software? Let us know results of investigation. 12fixlouie
