When camera is turned on the lcd as well as the veiwfinder is black. All functions seem to be there, but I cannot take a picture or viewed prieviously taken pictures on the card. It is really frustrating..is this fixable or is it less expensive to replace the camera? The lenz of my camera does not open and the viewfinder and lcd are black, although the batteries are brand new and all other functions appear to work. I havn;t done anything to try to resolve it apart from look on-line for solutions.
There is a temporary fix that works sometimes but eventually it will stop working alltogether. If canon can't help, might try this:

It may be fixable, but it may be expensive. You also have the option to upgrade your camera through Canon's Loyalty program. I'd give them a call and find out what your options are before going out and purchasing a new camera.

Just discovered it tonight - online research seems to indicate an lcd sensor problem. Don't know if it's worth spending $100 or more to get fixed; just really bummed that I'm long past warranty with both Cannon and Amazon
