I have files on my old gateway computer tower that i need. unfortunately, the monitor broke. I want to know if i can hook up my acer laptop to the computer tower so i can save the files on a flash drive or any other removable disks.

Your desktop tower/cpu tower has to be turned on to give those hardware power. If you can't turn on your computer then that means you have an internal problem with your motherboard etc. If everything else powers up except for the screen/monitor your video is dead. Find someone you know that has an extra monitor and hook it up to your tower, if it works then it's not your video but the monitor instead.

This could be a few things. all are simple settings.

If you can see other computers but can't get out, your acer needs the gateway ip number. If you are running DHCP this should be automatically set but you can also manually edit the IPV4 settings
TCP/IP and add the gateway as well as the other settings. The gateway is the ip# of your router that is connected to the cable modem or the dsl modem.

As long as you don't have the number range set you can fairly safely add any number in the allowable range. So you could edit the tcp/ip settings with something like the following:

adress: 192.168.2.25
netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.2.1 ** insert actual addy of router.

DNS servers can be found on your isp's info page. You can use any dns server that will let you connect. Without the dns you won't get out on the net either unless supplied by DHCP.

Try to reinstall the drivers for the monitor and see if that works.

u can get a usb adaptor for your hard drive.

It appears that your graphics card is defective. If the monitor works on your laptop and reinserting the graphics card did not help, I would suspect the card itself.
