I have a Kenmore Elite 110.15942401 washer that the agitator will not work nor will the drum spin during the spin cycle. When it gets to this point anywhere in the process, there is a loud metallic grinding sound. But no movement. I want to repair the washer to give to my brother. Any suggestions on parts to pick up from the Sears store?

I expect you will need to dismantle first and examine each part as it is removed and make a list.

Your description indicates at least a main bearing problem but with what seems to be such a complete failure there is certain to be "failure-related damage" to consider.

SOURCE: i have a sears kenmore

If the entire agitator is not moving you will have to replace it. If the top is not working properly, you will need the 4 little gears inside the top calle d agitator dogs. The set of four cost about $8.00 and are available at any appliance parts store. To get to the agitator dogs you will remove your fabric softner dispenceer, if you have one. Then pop off the top lid of the agitator. It will have a small spot to insert a screwdriver and pop it off. Then reach down inside the agitator and pull out the next little cover. Be carefull not to loose the seal. Then you will need to unscrew the bolt that you see in the bottom. Once you have done that the agitator will lift off. The top will not pop off the bottom and you will be able to see the four little tear shaped gears called DOGS. I love the name. You should be able to install the new ones fairly easily and then just line the top of tha agitator up with the bottom and push it back down into place. If you look down inside the agitator you will see two little clips that you will need to line up. It is really an easy repair. Let me know if you have any other questions.I hope this will FixYa. SOURCE: Loud grinding motor protesting humming w/no spinning or agitating

The drum/agitator bearings are bad I believe, or the gearbox has been damaged. This is an expensive repair. I would strongly consider buying a new washer. This is a great time to buy appliances since the stores are really competing, and the prices are at their lowest.

Kenmore agitates doenst spin

You will have to look at the inside of the washer when in spin cycle to see what is going on. Is the spinner motor not engaging the drum? Is the spinner working at all? It sounds like the spinner isn't being moved against the drum before the spin cycle starts. Most washers use a seperate spinner motor, which is lifted off the drum by a relay and / or solenoid and if one or more of those is malfunctioning, it will cause your described problem.

I have a Kenmore top loading washer model #110 and won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?pop=true&modelNumber=110.23912100

Also see the Whirlpool (Kenmore) Service Manual for top load, direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

The first thing I'd try is using a different cycle. If the washer works as it should, the problem points to the timer.

I'd also check to make sure that when replacing the switch, the connections to the timer haven't come loose.

Since you've replaced the Lid Switch, the motor has power for the drain and spin cycles.

These washers use a reversing motor. The motor turns one way for agitating and reverses for the drain and spin.

Since you cannot hear anything when it is supposed to be agitating, the problem does point to the timer or motor.
