The knob with dot and F & R should be set to the dot.
Thw slider should be at the white dot not the red dot. Red dot does forward only.
The rotary knob with WWW O === is the stitch selector.
This is the setting for straight and zigzag stitching

Stitch length control any number from 0.5 to 4
Stitch width control any number from 0 to 4
Special stitch modifier; Red dot
Buttonhole control; RED dot

I need the instructional manual for a White 793 model sewing machine

Singer manufactured some White sewing machines. The Singer support site, https://www.singer.com/support , has the White 793 manual listed as the W666-793. The current link to the manual is https://www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/801_white-666-793-x.pdf . Follow the directions for the Creative embroidery to set up an appropriate zigzag stitch. Just ignore the part about patterns (changing the settings every few steps). You will need to use the zigzag presser foot and needle plate. If you are having problems with the stitches skipping, check the needle point for damage (replace with a new needle)and clean the bobbin case.

I hope this helps.

Hi I have a brother VX1080 sewing machine and I can't get the zigzag stitch to work. Any ideas? Paula

Is your needle shaft bent? Or a bent needle? Call Brother support at 1-877-276-8437 and they will help you, and not charge for a download of your manual

Does automatic zig zag machine mean it can't do straight stitch? Simplicity 8220, I also can't figure how to thread it. Manual on web is $17, I only paid $10 at garage sale.

No, automatic zigzag machines will still do a straight stitch. The manual is the most important tool you can own for your sewing machine.

Machine sews zigzag although stitch is set at 0 for straight

It must be a design flaw- things don't always last like they are supposed to. I would personally check the physical reason it is not responding... knowing what it would take to make it stop moving- or whatis causing it to. *perhaps the switch isn't working to stop it- or the mechanism that controls it is worn down. If it was new- I'd return it- but there are only a few options at this point.

Changing stitches on a White 1418 sewing machine...

I have a White 1418. Here's how you do it:

1. Attach the buttonhole presser foot (should have come with your machine) and place the fabric underneath.
2. Set the stitch length knob to 0, the zigzag width knob to 5, and set the needle position to center. Sew 3-5 stitches.
3.Change the stitch length to 0.5, the zigzag width to 2, and the needle position to left. Sew to the entire length of your buttonhole.
4.Set stitch length knob to 0, zigzag width knob to 5, and needle position to center and sew about 3-5 stitches
5. Set the stitch length knob to 0.5, zigzag width to 2, and set needle position to the right. Pressing the R button (reverse button), sew up to the top stitches.
6. Remove the fabric and open the button hole with a button hole cutter.

Sounds complicated, but it's really easy. I love this machine, you just have to know how to use it!
