SOURCE: hp laserjet 1020 ( usb device not recognized )!?

I wish that there was a simple, single answer for this. There's only one thing more distressing - no device recognition at all. Here are the most likely culprits:

* The USB device or the USB adapter requires it's own power source. If your USB device or adapter came with an AC power "brick", try connecting it.
* Here's a likely one - the front USB ports on your PC case may be misconnected. I've seen them that way from the factory. It's a good idea to check the connections against specifications. The standard order of connection is Red, White, Green, Black. No more than 4 wires per USB bank are needed.
* Defective device. Do not assume that all PC components work correctly out of the box. I've seen many new USB devices that do not work. If you can, try the device on another PC.
* All drivers are not installed. Some devices will require installing the driver package before plugging in the device. Some devices will also require basic USB files from the Windows CD before the unit will function. The general rule is to always follow installation directions precisely and to have the Windows CD ready.

I will now discuss how to address an unknown device problem which is caused by a driver deficiency.

1. Try to update the unknown device driver from within Device Manager. First try letting Windows search for one. If that fails, go back and choose "Select from a list" and then "Have disk". Browse to the device CD and look for the appropriate Windows folder there. Try browsing to the Windows CD (Win9x folder or i386 folder). Lastly, try updated drivers from the manufacturer's web site.
2. Try uninstalling the unknown device, unplugging the device and rebooting. Replug when back in Windows.
3. Be certain that you have the correct drivers! You may have gotten the wrong CD or a CD with drivers for more than one device on it.
4. Cleaning up in Safe Mode may be necessary. Unplug all USB devices. Reboot the PC. To enter Safe Mode, press the F8 key repeatedly while restarting the PC. Timing is important. Try to press quickly before the Windows logo screen appears. Pressing and holding the CTRL key may work too. Choose Safe Mode and open Device Manager. In Windows 2000 and XP, click View > Show hidden devices. Now locate all USB devices, HID (Human Interface Devices), USB drives and controllers/hubs. Remove all and save the USB Host Controllers for last. When done, restart and replug USB devices one at a time.

Just remember that you are entitled to support from the device maker. If you can't get help, do not hesitate to return the device. Some manufacturers only seem to respond to lost business. It's a shame, but it's true. Send them a message - that you won't accept shoddy goods or lackluster support.

SOURCE: Wireless router FIOS upgrade - now printer won't work

If the computers connect but the printer doesn't, then it probably means the wireless router is working ok. Not sure what you mean when you say you turned off the firewalls, but I'll have to assume you mean any built-in firewall on the router and hopefully the firewalls on your Windows computers (still not sure what you mean by "security things").

You mention that you entered the SSID and WEP settings manually. I'd start there in trying to fix the problem. On the wireless router, turn off WEP. Remove any WEP setting information on the printer. Don't worry, you can turn WEP on later after you've established a connection between the printer and the router. Often with wireless devices, you first have to establish a connection with all of your security turned off, then one by one, turn your security measures back on, testing the wireless connection each time.

You've probably already done this, but make sure you've entered the SSID correctly. Sometimes it's that simple a problem.

If these measures don't work, then it could be quite a variety of different issues. Wireless networks are impacted by a large number of factors and it's difficult to diagnose all of the possible problems with just the small amount of information you've been able to provide.

HP.com does have a web page for your product that gives you a set of troubleshooting steps:

Troubleshoot Wireless Network Connection Problems

Read through all of the suggestions on that page and see if one of them will help you. Sorry I can't offer more, but as I said, there are so many things that can interfere with wireless communication.

The only other suggestions (assuming all else fails) I can make would be to completely turn off your printer then turn it on. If that doesn't work, assuming you installed the printer software and drivers when you first got the printer, uninstall and reinstall the printer, just as you did originally. Sometimes that fixes problems that can't otherwise be detected. It's a last ditch effort, but if you have exhausted all other attempts to fix the network issues, that one might work.

Good luck.

SOURCE: hp laserjet 1020 ( usb device not recognized )!?

I have solved this problem, it seems that the cable I used isn't sufficient enough, it was cheap A-B USB cable for printer. I used then the quality cable from my external 3,5" hardrive. I uninstalled all USB related things in device manager, then restarted my computer (just for the case, remove the laptop battery for a while when you are using laptop), then turn on computer, install the laserjet software and then if the message on screen says "connect the printer", do so. Then you should get a messages about correct installing your laserjet and problem is solved :). Good luck, I spent nearly one dat solving this :)

We are connecting a Printer Gadget to DELL D600 laptop and it is getting detected. But when we connect a USB memory device to DELL laptop it is displaying "USB Device not recognized" message....

Sounds like the"device" is using all the current on the USB Bus ... buy a USB Hub ($5 on Ebay) to see if it cures the problem. USB current is very limited, but a Hub has it's own power supply.
