It is possible you wish to do this because you may have Vista or 7 loaded and not enough resources to mate with the software and programming. XP has become the now not really supported software you can still get updates soon it will be out of market. For lower end machines great software works well love it I wish they would have left it alone or at least keep supporting this Operating System. That is my opinion only I'm sure there are other who agree. Win 7 is improving but takes more resources these days to run.
1. Have a valid XP Pro disk I do not recommend Home versions go for the pro version.
2. Minimum 500 Gigs Ram 2.0 processor,
3. At least minimum 128 Graphics Card
4. Open your computer in BIOS mode by default it may boot from disc but if not set the boot order to recognize your CD or DVD Rom first boot.
5. Start the installation from the disk follow the onscreen instructions and that is about all you will need to do accept maybe play heck loading and finding drivers.
6. If you have the original software that came with your notebook you should have a driver disk. When it asks for drivers point driver search from your driver disk anything that is missing do a Windows Update when done loading drivers and getting on the Internet that is about it really.

Sometimes you have newer version already installed, sometimes some resources are not installed such as drivers, or things like dotNet is not installed or updated, sometimes there are resource conflicts.

Other times it can be a scratched disk, hair inside the disk tray or in the drive that is getting in the way of the optical sensor, and sometimes the drive itself is bad.

I would boot in safemode (hold down f8 immediately when it starts (when it says Starting Windows xp), then delete all printers (associated with this) in device manager.

remove any printer software as well (add remove programs or start programs (printer program name, remove software IF listed),

also remove the port you are using in device manager be it lpt or usb. if the drivers siuggests installking without it connected do so, otherwise, just restart and it shoudl start installking the hardware amnd software it finds. be sure you have the correct drivers ready as well>

The most likely causes are that you hooked the printer up prior to installing the software, the printer is defective, the USB hub has too many resource heavy things plugged into it, the usb port is corrupt, or the USB cable is defective. The first two are the most common causes.
